Interesting issue with COMAND and iPod...

I thought I would post this in case anyone came across a similar issue and could benefit from my experience. I have a 16 GB iPod Nano that is a few years old. I have it loaded up with all of my favorite tunes and I just leave it plugged in to the USB jack in the center console.
I listened to some tunes on the iPod last Saturday morning and then switched back to the (Sirius) radio. On Monday, I wanted to listen to some tunes on the iPod again, but when I switched to "Media" in the COMAND system, the music did not begin playing. The screen had all the normal info on it: album art, song title. playback time, etc. However, the cursor in the playback bar was not moving. I tried fast forwarding to another song and the screen updated, but still no music.
I tried a number of things: plugging the iPod into the other USB port, restarting COMAND, changing the USB cable, all to no avail. I even took the iPod into the house and re-synced it with iTunes. No luck.
I hated the thought of having to take the vehicle back to the dealer for such a niggly little thing, so I continued troubleshooting. I noticed that when I clicked the "Play" icon in COMAND, the "Play" icon at the top of the iPod screen came up, but still no sound. The iPod played just fine when it was not connected to the vehicle, and also when docked in my tabletop radio. Undaunted, I finally plugged the iPod back into iTunes and did a complete restore. It took a while for all my music to reload, but I figured if this didn't work, it was off to the M-B dealer.
I plugged the iPod back into the vehicle this morning and bingo! The music played just fine. So, somehow the software in the iPod got whacked and just wouldn't respond to the "Play" command from...well, COMAND.
So, just in case anyone runs into this issue, try restoring the iPod first before you do anything else.
Also, my next move is just to load up my tunes on an SD card and use that instead.....

Did you try rebooting your iPod? This has happened to me a couple of times with my iPhone. I discovered the fix for me was to turn the phone off and reboot it - maybe it would work with an iPod too.

I have also had problems with my iPod and COMMAND in my 16 C300. It seems that if I change songs too quickly the iPod and COMMAND get out of sync. I have resorted to using an SD card with all of my music and haven't had a problems since. Seems that there may be some timing or communications issues with the iPod interface.

I'm glad I spent the money. I use the iPod Touch with few problems. On rare occasions its had trouble connecting to the iPod, but it's easily fixed, and is very rare. I would rather use my installed SD card, but then I would not have my playlists. BTW, its COMAND, not Command. Spellcheck is not always your friend...

If you have a W205 C Class, you have COMAND. There is an upgraded version of COMAND that has a larger screen and more features including a HDD and built in navigation but either version is still the COMAND system.

After adding two new albums to my ipod the alphabetic search options on Audio 20 disappeared, as this had happened previously I knew that the fault lay with the ipod. After tweaking the ipod menu settings over a few days, full functions are now restored. The moral of the story is that if you have everything working properly, make a note of your settings on the ipod's Main and Music menus for future reference.

No, the standard system in a 205 is called Audio 20 and comes with a 7" screen. The upgrade is called COMAND and that comes with an 8" screen, They both share an architecture known as NTG5.

Actually, I tried to do that but the iPod wouldn't reboot. That sort of tipped me off that the thing needed to be restored...

By the way, the iPod is still playing just fine in the car :-)
