Custom iPhone EQ For Burmester

There's an app I use for equalization when I'm not quite able to get the sound I want from a factory system. Since my Audison/Focal/JL gear isn't in the C yet, I built a curve for the Burmester.

The physics of the Burmester...a bunch of 4" midrange/tweeters, no conventional woofers, two 8" shallow mount subs in the footwells and three more 4" mids for the center dash and two rear surrounds... is very midrange biased. The footwell subs also have to pull double duty as conventional subs plus play up well into the mid bass range. When driven hard, and I want to feel the kick drum, they tend to get loose and boomy in the midbass range. Dial the sloppiness out by reducing the volume and/or bass emphasis and all the power goes out the window with it. Ah, First World Problems. The mids also tend to get shrill and brassy when pushed.

It's not possible to mitigate all issues caused by the configuration of the speaker arrays and the environment, but some equalization can work miracles and really improve the listening experience.

The app is EQu by Elephant Candy. $4.99 and worth ten times that. EQu becomes your audio player while it's on, accessing your local music library on your iPhone. Files must be resident on the phone, no Apple Match or streaming.

If you connect via BT audio, you can use COMAND to skip tracks as you normally would. Here's the curve. Duplicate it by touching the line to create a control point, then drag the points to create the curve.

In settings (gear) set the headroom to Safe to start. If you want more gain (power) set it to Loud. Swiping up will raise the entire curve, increasing volume. On COMAND set BT audio to Boost.

On COMAND the Equalization is set to Treble 7, Mid -10 Bass 10, Surround is On and All Seats. Fader and Balance 0. Give it a try and let me know what you think or if you have any problems setting it up.

You can save your curves in the app if you want to experiment.

It should. I did test several EQ apps for Andrioid and there are a lot out there. It's hard to find one that's output didn't sound over processed. It's been awhile though, and the newer high end Android phones are supposed to sound pretty good.

The app is buggy as f***, crashes and wont let me lock the phone screen without shutting off the music. i've messaged them many times to fix it, and nothing.

i will agree that the sound quality is great with the custom EQ, no doubt about it, but the lack of support and quality of the app is very disappointing

That sucks. I've had zero issues on my 5 or 6. What version of IOS are you running on the device? There is another EQ app that I like and offers similar performance. Might not be as easy to use. It's called Equalizer by AudioForge Labs. I'm on the Beta team for it. The cool thing about it is you can save and swap EQs with other users.

ive been on the latest iOS releases on my 6+ since i got the app, i've even uninstalled and reinstalled the app and had to re-do all my EQs

shame i wasted the $5 on the app and another $3 for the internet radio version which didnt even utilize Apple Music like they advertised (complained to them and got no response) and now Apple Music is dead unless you pay for that as well.

Gave them a crap review, well deserved in my opinion.

Sorry about that. I haven't tried it on a 6+. You can report the issue to Apple and they'll issue you a refund. They're really good about that.

I'm not aware of any app that Apple allows to access the streaming raw files, which is where EQ would need to be applied. But the internal EQ on the device (Settings>Music>EQ) will work on Apple Music. I like the Rock or R&B presets for the Burmester. For anyone else trying this, make sure the free demo version works before upgrading.

I wish there was an equalizer function within COMAND, my moms old 535 had one and it was excellent.

Well at least we get a Midrange adjustment. The 221 was Bass/Treble. My Prima 8.9 is going in tomorrow. That gives me EQ on each individual speaker, as well as time correction, level control, and band pass filter:

Here's a nice write up of an Audison Prima 8.9 install in a W205 with the Audio 20 sound system...

For media using the IPhone native EQ set on Rock, I'm at T+7, M-10, B+6. It's fine at moderate listening levels but things start going sideways if I roll the volume up. Basically the Burmester is a sub/sat system, with a bass/midbass module on the floor and satellite 4"/Tweet for the fronts and rears. It's hard to get both the low bass and mid bass right in that set up. Either one or the other sounds good. MB should have given Dieter some space for 6" woofers in the doors.
