C450 engine clicking noise

Been reading the forums for the past few months and catching up on the C450. I finally took the plunge and picked up the car over the weekend and love it.

Palladium
Premium Package
Black AMG Leather Seats
Dark Ash Open Pore Trim
360 degree camera
Active LED Lighting System

I current have about 600 babied kms on it but I'm hearing a more noticeable clicking sound from the engine, almost like a knocking sound around 2000 rpms. It goes away if the rpm drops below 1800 or above 2500. This occurs regardless if the engine is hot or cold. Anyone else experiencing or have experienced this? Is this part of the break-in?

I hope this is not the same problem with the engines in the C300s?

Thanks in advance.

there IS some valve knocking, that's going to happen with these engines. it comes and goes, depending on temp, and revs..

Tried recording it but you can't hear it through the engine, road and exhaust noise. By ear it's definitely audible clicking/knocking sound.

Odd, I've never heard any kind of ticking or knock from my engine. I heard what sounded like a turbo bearing squeal two days in a row a month ago on first cold launch but nothing that sounds like a valve click ever.

Direct injection makes ticking sound at idle and a little above idle..that's normal

That's what I was told too, and the fact that these injectors are working at such high pressure

Ok thanks for the reply guys, I'll continue to keep an ear on it. If it changes or gets worse, I'll update and get the technician to look at it.

Its just annoying coming from a TL where the engine was quiet for the most part. Either than that, loving the car so far cant wait till 1,500 kms to open it up

Quick little update, finally have 1500 Kms on the car so I pushed it a bit more in S and S+ modes. The knocking rattling noise from the engine now starts to kick in around 1800 rpms and disappears at 3000 rpms regardless if the engine is cold or warmed up.

Little concerned that it may be the valve or rod issue. Gonna get the technician to investigate. Anyone else notice that distinct sound at those rpm ranges?

Clicking - Soft Knocking or Pinging Noise

I have a C400 which, I believe, has basically the same V6 engine as a C450, but with less hp and torque due to a lower turbo boost / different ecu mapping.

My car has a clicking / pinging kind of noise on acceleration that the dealer diagnosed as rattling turbo wastegates. Both turbos and wastegates were replaced - but the noise remains. The dealer now takes the position that that the noise is normal wastegate noise. The shop foreman and I took a test drive in a E400 coupe - no noise, and he confirmed the noise in my C. I've had to live with it. It's hard to tell if the noise described by the OP is the same noise that I hear, but mine is definitely not the direct injectors clicking.

If you find out what is causing yours, please make sure you post it.

Each view can also be subjective to your own tastes in addition to real engine issue possibilities. I'm very picky and my c200 (2.0 turbo petrol) makes noises I don't like, wastegate rattling, diesel like knocks when cold (injectors or other). It's not Japanese engine quiet as you'd expect from a premium brand but it is under warranty and if some of the noise is simply by design there is only one choice, live with it or sell it.

I was able to bring it to the dealer yesterday but given the traffic and surrounding construction, we were not able to hear and diagnose the noise properly. When we got back to the garage, he did rev it to 2000-3000rpm in park and the noise was not present. I just told him the noise is more audible under light to moderate load.

I'm slated to go back Tuesday morning when there is less traffic to pin point the noise.

Sorry for the late post but had the car back at the dealer last week so they can road test the car without the traffic. Shop foreman immediately heard the noise around 1800-2300 rpm under load but he immediately said its not the normal knocking/pinging sound. Ran some diagnostics, didn't seem to have any errors, did another road test and finally determined it was clatter from insulation/heat shield in the engine bay and exhaust manifold area. He says it vibrates at certain frequencies but goes away past 2500-3000 rpm. They tightened up the area and made sure nothing was touching, so far so good. He did say these engines do sound loud/rough at times compared to Japanese cars engines which I have been used to.

Crossing my fingers hoping that noise does not come back.

Glad to hear the noise wasn't an internal issue with the engine.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I had made a post about a similar problem [or the same] here: https://mbworld.org/forums/c450-c43-...low-gears.html

Since then, I took my car to my dealership and tried hard to recreate the noise but couldn't get the conditions right to make it loud enough. My ears could pick it up because I've heard it before. I suggested to let the car cool and have another test drive to recreate the sound, this time it worked, but quietly.

The dealer said it was wastegate chatter and that it couldn't be fixed, but they could delay the timing of opening.

Since then, I've tried to live with it but it is so irritating along with the interior rattles... Every time I go for a night drive, I can hear the damn wastegate rattle and have just discovered a new whistle that is similar to gently blowing air.

This is definitely turbo related as I can hear it more frequently in Sport+.

@5Zigen18 @heyjoe, any solutions since then?
