Manually installing COMAND unit (USA)
Hi guys,
For my 2015 C300, I'm wanting to take the standard screen with Burmeister and install the larger Comand display. After getting a loaner with the larger display, I couldn't even stand to look at mine anymore.
I started a thread a few weeks back asking if it were possible to installed a Comand unit, and people cited the cost as being too high, and suggested a knockoff on aliexpress. I looked at those, and they look like a mess. Menus are written in laughably bad english, and it wouldn't belong in a car like a Benz.
That being said, I've been looking at some salvage yards and they are asking about the same price as the aliexpress knockoffs, $500-$600.
I'm wondering if I were to purchase one of those, would it be able to be installed successfully? A few concerns...
1. Are the "guts" (i.e. chipset, media register, navigation files) all located within the screen housing itself, or is there a separate unit that I would also need to buy from the salvage yard?
2. My car has navigation pre-wiring. But I've heard you couldn't activate Comand navi w/o Benz doing it. Is this true? If so, would they activate it for a fee?
3. Has anyone ever upgraded from the stock screen to the Comand unit?
4. Even if I weren't able to get Comand navi activated, any other functions that wouldn't work if I made the swap?
Thanks!

You need the head unit which is located in the central console. The display just acts like a monitor. By the way you can't interchange COMAND unit display with Audio 20. The activation code of the head unit should be with the HU when you buy it. In order to make the HU work, It needs to be registered to VeDOC and then SCN coded to the car in order to work. In Europe, complete retrofit parts are around €3000.

Well, damn, thought it would be OK. Any suggestions on just upgrading the screen size instead?
