Bedding in new engine

Hi All,

I have a C250d with only 300+ miles on the car (all done by myself). Does anyone have any bedding in tips for me? What dynamic settings to drive in and whether I should shift it up?

I've hardly gone over 2500rpm and have been driving pretty steady in comfort mode.

The manual says take it easy but does not list specifics... Many people have conflicting views on bedding in and was wondering if any of you guys had any tips from a W205 (preferably diesel) point of view.

Thanks all.

Just keep checking the engine oil level. I did around 1300 miles before I checked the dip stick and it was bone dry. After putting a pint of oil in the engine the dip stick was still bone dry. Since then the engine hasn't needed topping up.

I always drive it like I stole it from day 1. Will rev all the way up to redline.

I come from an Audi - and those cars had oil burning/consumption issues. The people who followed slow break in procedure had much worse issues with the oil issue, while people who drove their cars hard from day 1 had nearly no issues.

Take that with a grain of salt. But it's not unheard of people saying you get a better seal/fitment on the pistons from a hard break in.

Modern engines are built to be run, there's very little break in needed. The bore finish is fantastic and the rings seat instantly, beyond that it all pretty much works.

I like to do the first oil change around 500 miles on any car, just to remove any assembly lubricants and any loose materials like casting flash or debris that may be lodged in the filter from initial assembly. But as far as operating the engine, let it run the way you want it to run.

Follow the factory recommendations...

Keep rpm low (under 3k eg for diesel) for the first 1000m
Do not labour the engine in manual mode or hold the rev limiter
Allow the engine temp to come up before working it..

Once a 1000m or so on it, start to use it more enthusaitically.. allow it to rev out and hold gears on occasion....

Its smart to never work a cold engine, or flog it and shut it down imdeiately no matter what kms are on the car..

Similarly the factory oil should not be removed very early, this is recommended by the factory. Some degree of bedding in is desirable and changing to very high perfromance oil during the bedding in process is a waste of good oil.. far better to wait until mid oil change cycle and do it then.. or just run it to the scheduled maintenance plan if light useage with a balance of highway and short journeys..

IF you tow, live in very hilly terrain, very hot climate of even very cold climate, adjusting service frequency would be smart....

Other than that enjoy...

Many thanks for all your responses guys. As I mentioned, many people have different opinions on the process.

Cheers

...and those people won't still be owning the car in a few years time so any bad practice now will be for the new owner to sort out.
