Stiff steering?
Hello all,
Something I have found to be uncomfortable about my c300 is that I'm constantly wrestling with the steering wheel. Whenever I go to turn the wheel, it's fighting me to get back to the center. Now I know a car does this naturally, but my other cars are more "gentle" about doing it. When I'm turning in the c300, I have to use a lot of my hand muscles to keep it turned, or it will sling back into the center quickly.
Has anyone else experienced this? Does this type of steering just come with the territory of owning a Mercedes, or is this something I should look into? I also have a 16' X3, and the steering is smooth and never an issue.

Hi,
I find my steering to be very smooth and is easy to turn, it certainly doesn't fight back as you say yours does.
I have driven other family members cars - new mini and a new golf and I have to say compared to those my steering is much lighter and easier to turn.
Possibly go into the dealer and ask to test drive others so you can compare it to your car?

I find mine to have a slightly heavy feel when moving off centre. Its not smooth like my BMW is. Once the wheel is moving its smooth and light, but there's definite resistance from centre which at times makes me feel like wheel alignment isn't quite right... when I know it is.

I know what you mean, this was my biggest gripe with the W205 over the W204 was the way the steering feels when trying to snap back to center. It's just the way they are, but they weren't always that way.

I've never felt that on either of the two C300's I've owned, or on the two loaners I've driven extensively. If anything, I find the steering on the light side ... although it does get slightly heavier off center.
Have you had your car's alignment checked?

Too much toe in or too little toe out would make the steering feel heavier in the dead ahaead and not necessarily pull left of right...
Mine had too much toe in, was heavier through the steering and scrubbed its tyres..
Felt it imediately and had the dealer check alignment, sure enough, too much toe in, they corrected it to optimal factory spec (ie mid range) and both the weight and scrubbing were improved markedly..
I requested they rebalance the wheels to to account for the uneven wear..
NOTE they also went full top end factory spec on the ptressures to to try and aleviate some of the wear.. (ie move it central) to extend the tyre wear life, but the road feel was horibble and harsh.. i corrected to factory normal (single passeneger min load, normal speeds).. vast improvement...
Summary have they check all the basics first..
Best of luck resolving your issue.

I know what you mean. When I switch to Michelin A/S4s my steering gets this way too. It’s smooth, lighter on winter tires. Idk how much tires influence this, but it can be an annoying effort to make sharp turns at low speeds in parking lots.
