Help! My oil filter paper insert is stuck with cap

Doing first oil change using an extractor. All went well until I try to remove the paper filter insert from the oil filter cap assembly. I checked the new filter, there's no hook or anything, but it's stuck extremely tight, no amount of pulling, turning, can break it loose. I am pulling so hard that I am afraid the long plastic stick in the center will break from the cap. I am at the point of trying to cut it but don't know if there's any implications.

I searched old posts but they all seem to be about oil cap stuck with housing. No one ever had my issue. Any tips?

I have no issue with turning the paper insert counter clockwise while pulling down on it. Good luck.

I wonder if it makes a difference when the filter is hot or cold. I was doing it while engine is cold because I wanted the oil to drain back as much as possible to avoid a mess while trying to take it out.

Anyway, it seemed just impossible to simply turn and pull out. So I ended up cutting the paper of the old filter from side. Once enough paper has been cut, it appears to have release the tension and I was able to twist it off.

The only issue is, while doing the cut with a knife, I mar'ed the surface of the plastic insert slightly. Would it be an issue? I wonder if the smooth surface has anything to do with having the oil flow at intended rate or whether a mar'ed surface will lower its structure integrity under high heat and pressure.

I changed my oil while cold so that's not it. What plastic insert are you referring to that was marred?

I have had one that was easy off and one that was very tight.
After some messing about it loosened off.
