No analog Aux In. Just BT, USB or SD card.

So playing FLAC music files need additional step of conversion to mp3.

I think FLAC at 44,100/16 Bit will play from a USB drive or an SD card. Normally you'd want to avoid analog out from your device since it has to pass thru the device's tiny headphone amplifier which is generally the noisiest link in the signal chain.

If you've got hi res FLAC (96/192/256 at 24 Bit) on a portable device like an Astel/Kern, you're out of luck. No aux in and the BT can't handle the high bitrate stuff.

since we are on this topic,

is there a way to connect iphone to usb and get direct control?

currently, when i connect iphone to usb it only lets me play music ACTUALLY stored on the iphone.

i only have pictures on my phone. i do not like to load music into it nor videos.

i usually stream spotify, pandora and netflix.

currently i do this via bluetooth, but as you know bluetooth compresses the music so it never sounds good. it just sounds acceptable.

idealy i would like to connect the device directly to usb port, and then use the iphone freely to choose whatever source i like (spotify, pandora, etc).

Yeah, once it's connected you can launch any music app (or anything that produces audio) on the phone and play it thru COMAND. You just need to have one local audio file in your library.

But...

If you use COMAND to do anything other than control volume or skip tracks the phone will revert back to the native music player. So you have to do that stuff on the phone itself.

I use a hard mount for the phone that puts it in easy view and reach (and charges it) for that reason.

ahhhhhh, so you need 1 audio or video LOCALLY!

no wonder, everytime i connect it, it tells me there are no local files (on the command screen) and becomes unresponsive with no options.

i'm going to give this a go.

anything free as far as music on the itunes store? anyone know? dang i don't feel like spending $1.29 a track.....lol

as far as holder, i use pro-clip. it was dumb expensive at $75, but the quality is top notch. i just wish they would make one for the driver side.

i can barelly read my phone's screen since it sits on the passenger side.

Unfortunately all my music files are at least 92Kb/s at 24 bit . I have an external Audio Engine DAC but that's no good without Aux input .

I have that same ProClip. Whenever I suggest it here on the forum guys go bat**** about the price so I stopped. But yeah, it's the best mount by far. All my cars have them.

Got it. So the DAC is male RCA out? Ya know, USB is just 4 leads, hot, ground and two data. I wonder if anyone makes a USB to Aux In adapter? Hmmm. I'll poke around a little.

It's strange, we didn't get an AUX-in either in our car (which I was hoping for to connect my AK240), yet the manual seems to suggest the opportunity does exit. I never followed it up with the dealer but that cable must be available.

According to the 2017 C class COMAND manual, these are the Permissible formats:
The multimedia system supports the following audio formats:
MP3, WMA, CD-A, AAC formats: .aac, .mp4, .m4a and .m4b
Copy-protected iTunes® music files with the .m4p file extension are not supported.

The multimedia system supports the following video formats:
DVD-V, MPEG, WMV, M4V, AVI up to 720p

Permissible bit and sampling rates:
The multimedia system supports MP3 files of the following type: fixed and variable bit rates from 32 kbit/s to 320 kbit/s, sampling rates of 8 kHz to 48 kHz

The multimedia system supports WMA files of the following type:
fixed bit rates from 5 kbit/s to 384 kbit/s, sampling rates of 8 kHz to 48 kHz
The multimedia system does not support WMA files of the following type:
DRM (Digital Rights Management) encrypted files, Variable bit rate, WMA Pro, 5.1 surround sound

If I had a FLAC file, I would go ahead and try it anyway.. wouldn't hurt.

When all else fails...read the manual

Good info. Doesn't sound promising for FLAC, and converting it to AAC or MP3 makes it lossy and defeats the purpose.
