Im very interested in hearing more about this;
i do believe even thuogh its electromechanical, its still speed sensitive steering. could be a calibration issue with the new motor.

If the car took in enough water to hydro-lock the engine there's a good chance some other stuff that wasn't designed to be submerged got drenched, probably for a long time. The air intake is at the very top of the engine. That's how high the water needed to be to get ingested. Water can't be compressed. When it's drawn into the cylinders the piston slams into it like it's a chunk of concrete and throws a rod. Which is why it's a bad idea to try to drive thru standing water.

Was this car a salvage vehicle that was in a flood? If it was. I would expect all kinds of issues that might be hard to diagnose and fix.

A flood in and of itself wouldn't necessitate an engine replacement. It sounds more to me like fresh water ingestion. It's pretty common when drivers forget that even a foot of water depth produces a wave as the car moves through it that can swamp the intake. It only takes a little water in a cylinder to destroy the engine. If the steering rack is electronically assisted and it sat submerged while the car was immobilized it probably needs to be replaced. Should be covered under Comprehensive insurance like the engine was.
