Flush transmission fluid at 28,000?
The dealer told my son that he needed to have his transmission fluid flushed at 28,000 miles. Is that a thing?

No, not a thing. The maintenance schedule calls for a transmission service at 60k miles. (30k Miles for AMG models). That would be drain/refill. A flush (running something through the tranny to remove stubborn deposits and quickly draining it) isn't necessary or especially effective. If the car has a transmission filter it would be changed at that time as well.

hello, thank you for this confirmation.
But do you think that it can be a good ting to do it more often ? 60000k miles is a lot ! In Europe they told me 60000 kms and it seemed too long to me already...

A drain and fill (not flush) should be at the 60k miles (or 6 years, whichever comes first) service interval. This is typical for many brands.

Do it at every 40k~60k miles depending on your driving style. Drain oil in oil pan, torque converter, and oil pump. Almost all oil will drain. This is a standard procedure recommended by MB.

At that low mileage, only if there's some specific reason, like water intrusion in the trans fluid. In my experience, drain & refill is all that's necessary. A trans flush is risky because it may dislodge crud that can stop up passages or damage the internal parts.

Edit: MB website states "Replace transmission filter (once at 3 years/50,000km), gasket, bolts, and oil to prevent internal transmission componentry from wearing prematurely" I'm pretty sure it was 4 years/60k km before.

Trans service is an expensive maintenance item. Perhaps M-B should provide it's buyers with some justification for what may be the shortest trans service period in the industry. Is the C300 trans made by Rolex from unobtainium? My Porsche's maintenance schedule requires auto trans fluid & filter change (NOT flush) at 120K miles and I changed it at 90K.

Dealer tranny service and upcoming spark plug change here in the US are two good reasons to research Mercedes Prepaid Service going into 40K service - since a 2-pack or 3-pack will cover 40K B+ - spark plug change - - 50K service - and 60K service with tranny service if 3-pack....

I just had the trans service on my w213, it's around $700 on that one and $600 on the wife's x253. Both 4Matic. Spark plugs are a couple hundred more. Spark plugs are easy to do yourself if so mechanically inclined on the M274 engine, trans is something I always get done at the dealer. I had them drain the differentials too for $75 a piece while it was up there. Had mine done @ 23k since it was a CPO and I don't know the history, wanted to reset the clock so I know what it feels like fresh and it was a noticeable difference.

Lurkerlisa - there is no downside to doing the ATF fluid service early other than the cost to do it and depending on whom gives you opinion benefits will range from good to nothing doing so at your mileage. Early ATF replacement discussions can easily be found with searches and you will find many ranges of passionate opinions and you and your son can decide for yourself if you feel the cost is worth it.
MB does not have a flushing procedure in the WIS for these models - they recommend a drain, drop pan, replace filter, drain torque converter, refill. On these cars it is not possible to do just a fluid replacement without dropping the pan since you can't drain it without removing the fill pipe and once you push the fill pipe out of way you have to reinstall it back into position (or replace it) inside of the pan. I attached the general WIS sheet for the drain/refill procedure just to give you an idea of the overall procedure but this doc does not have all the model specific details. The standard procedure does get a large percentage of the fluid but does not change fluid in tubing, remaining fluid in valve body and the standard atf cooler - generally all but 2 - 3L or so get replaced without any use of a flush machine.
