Wrist Pin - Worst Case Scenario

Hello folks,

I have a 2015 C300 with the dreaded wrist pin issue.
I'd like to get some info from you veterans as to what would happen if I don't do anything about the wrist pin issue?
Anyone here who hasn't done the wrist pin service and is still driving around?
Will the engine fail? Or is it just about the noise it makes when engine is cold?

Thanks,
Dan

I have the same issue. I was told by several Mercedes mechanics that it is purely a sound issue and does not cause premature cylinder wall wear like others have stated. I have not fixed it on mine because the turbo 4 sounds crappy as it is, the wrist pin noise is not worth the effort of a teardown that could potentially ruin the engine, if the technician is inexperienced. My warranty is in effect until 75k miles, but still. For me, having the engine torn down presents a greater risk than the original wrist pin issue.

Take a look at my thread from when I was purchasing my W205 last year.

Mine was done with 49757 on the engine and it now has over 51000 already in just about 3 weeks. My engine runs phenomenal. Quiet, powerful and smooth as can be. Just touch the gas and I'm under way. Averaging 27-29 mpg as well,

Confirmation bias

I have seen dozens of reports from owners who had the wrist pin repair (including myself, in 11/15). I have seen only one owner who was dissatisfied after his wrist pin repair. He thought his car's acceleration was substantially slower. His "fascination with acceleration" tells me that he blew off the break-in period after his repair. You DO have to observe a break-in period -- no full-throttle acceleration and no sustained speeds over 100 kmh (60 mph) for the first 1000 km (625 miles).

Against your uncertainty over the repair stands the certainty that every dealer and most potential purchasers will hear the unrepaired wrist pin defect and pass on buying your car (especially after it is out of warranty). If, against all odds, the repair does have bad results (and the dealer can't fix it). THEN you can trade the car and still get full value for it! (The noise will be gone, and the slower acceleration cannot be noticed on a test drive when a comparison to a faster car is not possible.)
