I rear ended someone and the car is a write-off for insurance purposes but was wondering if it was still fixable. The front frame rail took quite a bit of damage and I'm wondering if it is fixable - looking for opinions. What do you guys think? The rails are part of the crash mitigation system. They are designed to bend (e.g., accordion) and thereby absorb energy during a frontal crash to protect the occupants. Post crash repairs to the rails (e.g., welds) degrade the system. The insurance company would rather write off the car than be responsible for a much more expensive personal injury claim due to a faulty crash mitigation system that they knew about. You can certainly fix it but as Alexasa said with a salvage title and you may not be able to get insurance.
