Is it safe to hand this number out if requested to check for software compatibility?

The VIN number is available for anyone passing your car to see. It is displayed under the driver side windshield near the lower corner. Based on this, it is probably safe to give it out. However, you do raise a concern. On my C7 Corvette, I can type the VIN number into a Chevrolet web site and see what software versions are installed on the onboard computer (e.g., engine management, steering, NAV, etc.). I guess there is a remote possibility that the car can be hacked.
