Range indicator is useless!

Anybody else find the range indicator annoying?

The reading goes up and down for no reason and when it’s below 25 miles it stops displaying how many miles left, that’s exactly when you need it!

This morning I filled up and it said I had 422 miles. Then I drove about 12 miles it was showing I have 447 miles!

Strange as the consumption reading is quite accurate, so it shouldn’t be difficult to calculate range accurately.

Range is based on speed and fuel flow so yes it constantly changes as you drive varying speeds and stop with engine running at lights etc.

It is pretty accurate but not perfect hence why at for you 25 miles it turns off as it is time to find a station 25 miles previous since yo uare running on 1 gallon of fuel sloshing around in tank....

And next fuel level is W for walk.

Exactly. It should be based on your average fuel consumption in the last 300-400 miles not your last 2 miles. Then it’d be much more useful.

Who knows what they based it on last 2 or last 40 or last 10000 but they base it on something
Mine is fine for me as once I get off interstate and start driving in town the range changes to my city driving ...
In the end I just use it to check "Hey can I make it to airport and back on what I have and still have some in the tank?"

What would be nice would be GALLONS left in tank button.

You can reset that as trip if you want. The range is related to mpg per current session. So if you start city and get to highway it will always go up.

I see this every day and I've never had anything wrong with it.

Imagine this scenario... you fill up, then drive on the highway with no traffic for 300-400 miles in to Los Angeles. Fill up again as soon as you get off the freeway. Would you still want to base the estimate on your previous 300 miles if you were going to be solely on the surface streets?

The range indicator is based on your current driving condition and style. It is giving you an approximate range based on IF you were to continue driving the same style. If you change style, IE transition from surface street to on the highway, it will change accordingly.

I find the range indicator very useful and accurate .It gives your range based on your current driving conditions ( speed etc ) ,not on the last 300 miles which would be totally irrelevant .

I agree with the original poster and understand how the car calculates the range but still find it annoying when it says 50 miles to empty and then 25 miles 5 minutes later and then 0 miles 5 minutes after that.

I've had both a C350 and a C43 and I've never seen it change that quickly , in fact I've been impressed how accurate it seems to be .. Even if you go from steady driving to stop and go conditions ( which is quite often the case when you're looking for fuel ) , the fuel consumption rate shouldn't cause such a quick change in estimated mileage .

Makes sense tho.
