There is a short rubber fuel line/hose in the engine compartment that is attached with compression clamps; the hose connects the fuel line from the gas tank to the high pressure fuel pump. When it gets cold outside (below ~40 degrees Fahrenheit) the clamps loosen a bit and the hose will leak gas. This is what you will smell in the cabin. Once it gets warmer outside or the engine bay warms up, the smell will tend to go away.
No clue how they've gone all this time without a safety recall, but I did make a report to the NTSB last month when it started happening to me.
The fix is to have the rubber line w/clamps replaced. If you still have warranty the dealer can take care of it. Otherwise if you have an M-B independent mechanic in your area I would go that route.

Found this thread with photos of the area where the hose is located:

I had this issue repaired last month on my 2016. On mine they found leakage from the seal on the high pressure pump and at the connection of the rubber hose. The fix was to replace the high presure fuel pump and rubber fuel hose and clamps. All done under warranty.

This is a fairly common issue reported by W205 owners in the M-B forums over the last three or so years. Some have noted that dealers also told them it is common to see owners bring their cars in for this issue as well.

Yeah mate
I had the same issue in the winter months or when the car has just driven a few km and is still not at optimum temperature.
I changed my rubber line and clamped it down pretty good.
Now, no matter what temperature outside or in the engine bay, no smell comes through in the cabin

same
Same happened to me, 2015 C400 but it happened at higher mileage, they replaced the hose, clamp and pump, worked fine after this....
