Thumbs down Campaign No. 2019080019, November 2019 Replace Steering Gear Bolts

Just got this in the mail.

Mercedes-Benz AG ("MBAG"), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on
certain Model Year (“MY”) 12-17 C-Class, CLS-Class, E-Class, GL-Class, GLC-Class, GLE-Class, GLKClass,
GLS-Class, M-Class, S-Class (205, 218, 207, 212, 213, 166, 253, 292, 204, 217, 222 platforms)
vehicles, the aluminum bolts of the steering gear housing cover and the aluminum bolts on the power
steering rack may corrode over time due to moisture intrusion in combination with aggressive road salt.
The corrosion, in combination with driving loads could result in the fracturing of the corroded bolt(s). If all
the bolts were to fracture, this could lead to a separation of the power steering unit from the steering rack
and could result in power steering failure. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the
aluminum bolts of the steering gear housing cover and the aluminum bolts on the power steering rack and
seal them, or replace the power steering rack if necessary.

Got that notice yesterday too. I’ll prob get it done in April along with swapping out my winter wheel setup. I wonder if we even get any snow (Southern NY). Also have my last prepaid maintenance to do. New spark plug, yay!

Hopefully this doesn’t happen in the meantime:

How do you know if your car is covered? If I don't get a letter, does that mean it isn't? I have a 2016 C300, and we are big time in the salt belt. (That comes just before the rust belt)

It's like one of those commercials that runs at evening news time-"Don't take this drug if you have been in an area with certain fungal diseases." Maybe only cars with certain fungal diseases will get the letter. (The car, not the owner)

Thanks for that-I tried and it looks like my car isn't covered. Either they are not worried by my bolts, or I already have the steel ones.

That site won't help you. I think it only shows recalls.

I checked my vin and nothing came up. I still got the letter.

That makes sense-If we all have aluminum bolts, they all must be at risk. Maybe they aren't alerting everyone at the same time.

Maybe they're starting with the saltiest states first.

It won't show up on the MB recall site because it's not a recall. It's a service campaign.

Angry 2016 C300 in Northern Michigan not part of recall?

I live in northern Michigan and we certainly have salt, below is the response I received when I contacted MBUSA.
I contacted MBUSA about my 2016 C300.
Thank you for your email to Mercedes-Benz USA.

We are in receipt of your inquiry regarding Service Campaign: 2019080019 for the replacement of bolts at the Steering Gear.

Please be advised that this campaign is VIN specific and not including every model in a particular year/class. Records does not show your vehicle is included.

Review of records show your vehicle has an open service campaign for a software update. At your next service the dealerships can perform this.

We appreciate the opportunity to respond. Have an enjoyable day.

Kind Regards,

Debbie A.

Also the machine that writes the Service Campaign letters might not have gotten to you yet.
