Could you give me a review on it? How close to stock is everything?

In a perfect world, I'd plug my phone into a USB connected to my car, place my phone in the arm rest and use the screen + wheel to control everything without touching my phone. Id answer calls and everything without having to remove my phone from the armrest.

Is this feasible with the aftermarket option?

 

I did this install a few weeks ago, and so far so good. The installation is very straight forward, and only a torx screwdriver is needed.
You connect your phone to a USB connector directy to the aftermarket Apple Carplay box, of wirelessly via WiFi. You do however lose 1 of the OEM USB connections in the center console as this would be used for the sound input from the Carplay box into your NTG head unit. I extended a lightning cable directly from the Carply box into the center console for easy access.
The Carplay works in parrallel with your NTG head unit, and you will always have to have the head unit set to USB 1 or 2 AUX (depending on which is connected to the Carplay box) for sound when using Carplay. Video of either the Carplay or NTG Head unit can be switched between by holding the ¨BACK¨ button pressed for 2-3 seconds on either the steering wheel or center console.

Phone calls can be made and answered from Carplay using the microphone and stereo of your car as normal. The ´Hey Siri´ function is available, but requires the installation of an additional microphone directly connected to the Carplay box.

The only thing I found kinda off is when you´re using Apple Carplay, you have no climate information on your screen. To see your setpoints of the AC, fans etc you need to switch to the video of the NTG Head untis by holding the BACK button.

I highly recommend the Road Top wireless CarPlay box (from AliExp, received in 3 days via DHL). Installed mine 2 weeks ago and it’s been solid. The great thing is it also uses the OEM mic (so no having to switch to MB Bluetooth when you place calls). I previously had the JoyeAuto installed for almost a year and it was nothing but problems. Mic issues, wireless CarPlay was always dropping, music stuttering, random restarts, black screens requiring reboots and the customer service was lacking.

Every single one of the provided MCU and firmware updates has not resolved this issue. The box just does not fully shut off causing serious battery draining. If anyone knows of any alternative box that uses the oem microphone please do let me know.

That’s the video. It really wasn’t hard as I’ve previously installed the JoyeAuto unit. Cable management was probably the most difficult part. Since you have to make sure the cables are tucked away nicely for you to be able to fit the head unit back in.

 

Do you guys think this will work on 2016 e63? I have a ntg5.0

 

I’d send a message to the seller and let them know about your vehicle and see if they have something that’s compatible.

Thanks for posting. I highly recommend reading this thread as the unit mentioned is crazy good and super easy to install. Plus I'm pretty sure it works with the C-class (2016 to 2019). There are both Android Auto & Apple Car Play variants. I have the ACP one and it is a GOD send! Good luck!!

Jules, I read that thread you posted. They talk about getting the Command Firmware updated and using the OBD module to get carplay added to to the Command screen. Is this what you're talking about? Have you tried this on a 2016 W205 C300? Any luck on getting it to work? I posted in that other thread to see if this module would be a method that would work for our w205s.

 

Hey Kush. I have not tried this on a 2016 C. However, you may just email the seller (Vlad) and see if his OBD module supports your VIN to “unlock” CarPlay. Then I would email the car2airplay seller to see if their module works (should since the website says Mercs 2016 -2019). Just ensure you follow the steps outlined to be sure your head unit is up to date. Good luck in your mission!!

I"m a bit late to the party here but how has this been working for you? I have to replace my aftermarket carplay box because it locks up in the winter and I can't see my backup camera until it really warms up. Does the roadtop version use the stock microphone for the telephone? did it come with an audio adapter for the USB input or does it integrate fully into the stock harness?

Hey mate, are you still having a problems with your CarPlay kit? I purchased one from Carlinkit on AliExpress. The next morning after installing it a message come up on car dash saying auxiliary battery malfunction. I think I have the same problem as you. did you resolve it by any chance?

 

I believe your issue is with the Auxiliary battery which could perhaps be from the installation as well. My problem was with the actual main battery. Since replacing the battery, I’m not receiving a battery error. However, my car still sporadically connects to the box throughout the day and night. It is now down to 1 to 2 times a day. I certainly averaged a lot more before the battery replacement which came as a result of installing the box. I wonder if these random connections become more frequent as your battery degrades. I will say since upgrading to the iPhone 12 Pro my initial connection when starting the car has been very reliable in regards to autoconnecting and firing up CarPlay.

 

FYI, to monitor/track the sporadic connections that occur when the car is off, I have created a shortcut with the Shortcuts app to give me a notification whenever the Bluetooth connects to ‘Carplay833900’.
