Apple CarPlay upgrade for the E63
I was checking out the new cars in the Pic Thread, and Peter in Germany showed off his new car, with an Apple CarPlay upgrade for the stock system!
I'd never heard of this before, and would love to know more about its availability in the US. I didn't want to hijack the other thread, so I've copied his relevant posts, hoping that Peter or others can chime in with more info.
My 2016 definitely has the NTG5.X head unit, so I'd definitely be interested in this upgrade.

You need the 2015 NTG 5 for Apple CarPlay first. So if you have a 2014 you need to find a retrofitter for the NTG 5.
The Apple CarPlay will be coded as far as I know to the Mercedes database with your VIN. After the retrofit it is in the fitment list of your car (VIN based) in the worldwide Mercedes database.
I need to ask if this is possible on the air or by OBD

There are a few things: (http://www.apple.com/ios/carplay/), but I think there are 3 main points for me:
- Easier to use than the current system
- Access to maps with updated searches and traffic-based map routing, even after my free trial period in the MB expires
- CarPlay is only going to get better over time, and this will probably allow me to have better software over time, while car systems usually get stale after 1 year

Unfortunately, it looks like Peter10654 has only made 5 posts in 9 years. The last 3 were over 1 month ago, and it seems like no one else out there knows anything about this upgrade.

You are right. But now, to change from 4.5 to 5s1 you need to change camera control units and some cameras as well. I was in it few month ago. And we found out that after changing to new Comand unit, which is 1.5k$ you need lots of supporting hardware. And total cost comes up crazy.

You are right. But now, to change from 4.5 to 5s1 you need to change camera control units and some cameras as well. I was in it few month ago. And we found out that after changing to new Comand unit, which is 1.5k$ you need lots of supporting hardware. And total cost comes up crazy.

Although not the same as Apple CarPlay, I setup my COMAND NTG 4.7 with Android phone mirroring and am very happy with the end result. It's an all digital connection using HDMI to LVDS.

figuring the cost of NTG + parts , what dav461 said seems perfectly sensical. furthermore, your NTG5.1 retrofit STILL DOESN'T HAVE CARPLAY which was the point of the whole thread.. .
