I have my original 'halogen' taillights (which I prefer), but they contain separate turn signal bulbs that are both physically and electrically disconnected from the factory for the US market.
The bulbs are old school filament PY21W type of the amber variety. I thought, what else can I do with this space?
So I bought some red LED PY21W bulbs and then wired the sockets into the existing brake/turn circuit.
The blue arrows indicate the negative side circuit of the bulb socket. These are punched out from the factory at the rectangular hole in order to disconnect the circuit. Now reconnected with solder.
The yellow arrows point to jumper wires I added to connect the positive side of the bulbs to the brake/turn circuit. The existing connections were terminated with the assistance of my dremel cutter wheel. (Simply reconnecting the original traces does NOT result in functional amber turn signals.)
The effect is subtle and gives a little more visibility when I brake. Otherwise it's completely useless.

As far as taillight upgrades go, I actually prefer the 'basic' version with the single light pipe that follows the trunk line instead of the double loop on the full LED version.
The facelift taillights look too much like a Nissan Maxima to me.
If an aftermarket comes out with a more unique look I'd be interested.
