Extended Warranty? Is it a true need
Hello all,
We have a 2017 MB C300 AWD Cabriolet with less than 25k miles. No problems thus far and only used as a Sunday driver. The factory warranty is about to expire and I'm unable to make a sound decision based on the data that I've retrieved thus far from Consumer Reports. The data shows overall reliability as 3/5, but for Major Engine issues, a 2/5. Now having read this, I did try to contact them for their methodology. I inquired about the sample size and which model of the c300 series were sampled. I asked given that some of the comments on the site were from AMG owners with different set up etc. Unfortunately, the best they could do was to send me to a link on Extended warranties, which did not help.
So with this said, I thought it wouldn't hurt to check in with the MB enthusiasts world and hope you can provide a newbie your honest sentiment and maybe point me to some data that will allow me to make a more informed decision. Want to keep my wife happy. Thank you kindly!

The diesels are currently have a lot of issues with Nox sensors and adblue issues.
Some people have been fortunate in that Mercedes pick up the bill, others have been charged over £1200.
I have the warranty on my 2017 C300h mainly for the hybrid side, but it did cover my adblue issue a couple of weeks ago.
A lot of owners never take out a warranty and never need one. Others do have one and never need to use it.
It's personal choice.

2018 - C300 - 4MATIC
![Question](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
Hello I have to admit I have the same reflexion…lately I made an appointment at the dealership for a check engine light.
After checking the car the technical advisor mentions that this is a known problem at Mercedes Benz...there was gasoline in the engine oil ???
So they changed the engine oil and reprogrammed the transmission and other component that escapes my mind at the time of this writing but hey...since this visit my C300 is running like a charm. That being said this is my first Mercedes Benz (2004 Saab 93 former driver) I drove this Saab 93 for 13 years before buying my Mercedes Benz (W205 -.
During my visit I asked the technical advisor to tell me the date of the end of the manufacturer's warranty and it ends in August 2021. My Mercedes Benz displays less than 40,000km on the clock and I'll take short trips to work. From my reflection knowing that the manufacturer's warranty is 4 years / 80,000km...I am still a long way from reaching 80,000km so I hesitate to obtain the extended limited warranty of three years but of another point of view I believe that the investment of $3150.00 + txes for an additional coverage of 36 months is not that expensive knowing that the hourly rate is close to $ 180.00 /hour CDN dollars and that the purchase of the extended warranty can get me some peace of mind, and preserve the value of my Mercedes Benz...the advisor told me for this it's like flipping a coin...to be continued!

I purchased my 2015 c300 from a MB dealer in Nov 2018. Car had 14,000 miles. At that time I was driving 35,000 miles a year, and I didn’t want to have to think about paying for any potential problems, so I purchased an extended warranty for $2795. Coverage til March 2022 or 120,000 miles.
car now has 64,000 miles. I have needed only one repair (see below), and it wasn’t covered by the warranty.
In hindsight, I am ambivalent about my purchase. Here are the reasons why:
1) All maintenance work requires using MB parts if you have a MB warranty. As a DIY’er, I don’t mind at all using OE parts. For example, using a Mann oil filter instead of a MB filter, saving 50% of the cost. But having a factory extended warranty requires the use of all factory parts. If you aren’t a DIY’er this won’t matter to you. But for me, I’ve likely spent 50% more on parts/fluids then I would have, just to keep the warranty intact. I’m not worried about documenting the work because as I keep all receipts and photograph all the work while it is being performed. But if you are thinking of modifying your car, that’s also a no-no.
2) I believe MB is a PITA regarding warranty work, dealing with any warranty claim they can by saying it’s not included. For example, I had a front hood strut fail. Car had 58,000 miles, and was 5 years old. MB warranty doesn’t cover a hood strut. Really? Like a person is going to open/close their hood every day so it becomes a wear item. For another case of bad behavior, watch Doug DeMuro’s video on his MB and trying to get legitimate work done under warranty. Unfortunately he posted it after I bought this car. If I need any work before I sell the car I expect a lot of hassles.
3) On the plus side (to be fair) I can cash out the warranty at anytime. But I learned they deduct any warranty claims from the remaining value. So don’t assume you will get a prorated amount back if you decide to do this. If you don’t have any claims (like me) I estimate the warranty loses about $100/month in value.
4) If you decided to sell the car private party (I am) I think this will be a big positive for a buyer, To be able to say “this car is covered by a factory warranty til March 2022” should be a big bonus. And I think of setting the asking price both ways — you can have the car for $x with the warranty, or for $x-some amount without a warranty.”
is that worth $2795? For me, the headaches from a DIY perspective, dealing with Mercedes Service, and the price outweigh the benefit when selling the car.

I bought one years ago for my CLS and didn't use the fawking thing once! It cost me over 7500 bux too!!! It was for three years. I should have just put that money in the bank or a CD and sat on it. The woman that sold it to me was a real cunny too! Reading this reminds me how mad I was. Are you keeping the car longer? You really only drive it on Sundays??

I purchased the extended warranty for my15 C300 because of the wrist pin fiasco. You can find 2 year extended for under $2k here in USA. Search Jeff Jackson.

Picky, but when I state “factory extended warranty” it should be “manufacturer’s extended warranty”. The operative word is “extended”, in either case.
