Wink Another Carplay Thread.... I KNOW!!!

Alright everybody! Yes I know, another carplay thread when we have bunch already. I couldnt find my answer in any of the other threads which is why I decided to create this one.

Question 1: Do I NEED to have my AUX channel activated in order to use a carplay module? I currently have DMP's module connected, but is using the mic that was provided instead of using the OEM Car Mic. In order to use the OEM Mic, do i need to have the AUX Channel activated? I know there are OBD Plugs that can activate it instead of taking it to the dealers.

Not sure if yall are familiar with MBHouse in Canada, but they state that their module is more integrated, which uses the OEM Mic and which needs to have the AUX Channel activated in order for their module to work.

I found a VERY similar module (below image), if not the same on Amazon that states no coding/no aux channel need to be activated for the module to work. All the cables are the same as what MBHouse uses with their module.

What are your thoughts? What are your experiences? What module do yall use that works with the OEM Mic?

While I haven't done it yet, I will be having MB House install their module in my 2018 C300 later this year. They are a quality shop

I bought the RoadTop from Amazon - uses OEM Mic and after testing a call, it used the MB Bluetooth for the voice call with no issues.

The module comes with the USB to Aux adapter, but I separately activated the Aux thru OBD, so I simply do not connect the USB/Aux dongle, and choose Aux in the media menu, instead of Media Interface 1/2 (if you use the USB/Aux).

I still have to test siri functionality, but I honestly don't use it as much as I make calls.

I'll make a quick post about it.

Ahh interesting. So basically, I could just get the AUX OBD Activator and be good with using the OEM Mic? Cause right now I do have it on Media Interface 1.

I have the Roadtop too, which ODB did you get to activate the AUX? Was it easy to do? I have it plugged using the USB/Aux method but would prefer it to be cleaner by just having no extra cables. Thanks!

I just ordered an AUX Activator for my car! Fingers crossed it works and I can use the OEM mic with the module I have, which I bought from DMP.

Just trying to understand how exactly the OEM Mic will work while in AUX Mode? Doesn't the phone still need to be connected via Bluetooth with the car rather than to the carplay module?

So the Roadtop one does come with an external mic and a place to plug it into, but I left it disconnected and it works with the OEM mic by default (everyone says it sounds like I have the phone to my face. They can't believe I'm talking via the car speaker system). Have you tried unplugging the external mic from the DMP unit to see if it works?

Let me know which AUX activator you got and how it goes!

Do you have an older Roadtop unit? The one I purchased a month ago from Amazon doesn't come with an external mic - it uses the factory one.

Copy from the Q and A section for roadtop NTG 5.0 on amazon:

Question:
Does this require you install an external mic or does it use the built-in car mic? Does this require you install an external mic or does it use the built-in car mic?
Answer:
Hello, you don't need to install any mic, it use your original car speaker.

Hi! I purchased May 13, 2021 from Amazon. Now that I think about it, maybe I didn't get the external mic, can't remember, but I do know I'm using the OEM mic.

Can you link the ODB you used to activate the AUX?

Also I have noticed a strange/interesting thing. So if I'm sitting in my car, car/accessory mode is off, my phone will connect to Carplay. If I'm on the phone with someone, it switches over to Carplay, but because car and accessory mode is off, nothing is heard, so I have to manually switch it back to iPhone headset. Have you noticed that? I would think that unless the car was in accessory mode, then the Roadtop unit would be off since the MB screen doesn't turn on.

Roadtop unit stays 'alive' a while after the car is turned off. One of the reasons I use wired rather than wireless CarPlay.

Oooh! I dunno, it seems like a long time after. Like I would get home, turn off car, hours later go out to put something in car while on phone and it would switch over. It seems like it would actually power back on when doors are unlocked. A minor complaint really, wasn't sure if I was the only one. That and that if I was listening to music on Apple Music and the next time I get back in, it doesn't continue auto playing. Not sure if that is also a Roadtop thing. I previously used Dasaita in my Honda Civic and had neither issues.

Certainly in my car it stays live for a few mins after I lock the doors. I think it would come alive when the doors are unlocked though - it needs time to boot up I guess (its Android under the hood).
Someone else has mentioned it doesnt remember what you were listening to - that particular issue doesnt bother me but I can understand your frustration.
Its not perfect but its not far off and better than nothing. I see it as an interim fix until I swap my car in 18-24 months when Carplay will come as standard. For the price I am pretty happy.
