If I had to guess, the thief got his hands on the keyfob. I think it's like Elvisfan0108 alluded to... there's more to the story.

Don’t know this but lots of folks put the FOB in the cup holder, then leave the car running while going into a store. Don’t know these circumstances.

Watch out for relay theft, relay repeater. Lock your car at night with double pressing the lock key not the touch.

Mercedes has an option which most of the people don't know about, you can disable the signal by double pressing the lock key and this will make the car only opens by the buttons.
