Hello. Was doing the ATF change today on my 2015 C300 and saw that the steering rack on the passenger side was covered in some orange/yellow wax-like substance. I don’t think it was there last time I went under the car, but I’m not sure. Does anyone know what this is?
I did not see any engine oil or coolant leaks. They wouldn’t be that color anyway. The only thing I can think of is the grease inside the steering rack, but there were no apparent leaks. The unit looks completely sealed. No errors in dashboard either. Car is 4MATIC if that helps.
Edit: also belly pan was clean; none of it dripped down. Tried cleaning it off but it was to difficult to remove. It’s almost like candle-wax melted on it.
Google search indicates that cosmoline is a rust-preventative wax. Good thing I asked before trying to remove all of it. I wonder why it is only apply in that area and nowhere else. Thanks for the quick reply!
