How to loosen rusted lug nuts?

Hi,

Just went to Costco to replace my tires. However, one of the lug nut won't come off with air gun. The Costco tire service did not want to try anything. They told me to go to mechanics. I'm not a car guy but this does not sound like a mechanic's job.

Where should I go to get it lose?

Thanks

Get a socket of an inch size (not metric) that is just smaller than the proper metric size. Pound the inch-size socket onto the offending lug bolt. Use an impact ratchet to remove the offending lug bolt.

The bolt and socket will be destroyed. The good news is the offending lug bolt will be free and will offend no more.

Order 20 new lug bolts. They are wear items and don't last forever. They are surprisingly cheap for a Mercedes. Maybe not so surprising with the cheapness that is found on each new MB launche.

Try putting an impact socket on it and hit it very firmly with a hand held sledge hammer. The shock will help break the rust. I have had to use this truck a few times. Also plenty of penetrating oil.

I won't be able to do this myself. Where should I go to?

One method sounds like the lug nut will be destroyed. Are these nuts standard? Or do I have to go to the dealer to buy replacement?

You could buy online from mbusa or go to a dealership. They are ball seat ones with part number 000-990-17-07 fits the 2015-2020 C 300 and many other vehicles not just the two listed on the site.

Edit: Alternatively, you could also buy it from here for slightly cheaper:

Any tire shop can do this.

Buy lug bolts from the dealer. They are not standard.

I probably just wasted quite a bit money at the dealer. They charged me 1 hour labor and $17.50 for each lugnut

But you got them off, right? If you are not able to DIY, it was money well spent.

Yeah, can't argue with that.

I asked the dealer if they can replace all of the lug nuts. They said they can't because they don't have that many on hands. So I just asked them to replaced those the tire guy could not remove with the air gun.

I'm now looking at the online link provided by W205C43PFL. Interestingly, MBUSA has 19 in stock and ECS tuning has just 3.

To learn something here: let's say one lug nut broke next time, can the car be still driven safely? I was thinking you can't that's why I took it to the dealer directly (what if the tire shop broke the lug nut and they don't have a spare).

Thanks

If MBUSA online store has low stock, you may also check other dealerships or ask your dealership to check inventory from other locations.

Honestly I don't personally recommend that, after all, the wheels and tires are the only things that connects you and your car to the road. It will be disastrous if the wheels fall off when you are driving on the freeway, another reason why the wheels should be properly torqued as soon as possible. I believe C 300's torque spec is 96 pound feet or 130 nm. It was a wise decision on your part to have got it fixed as soon as possible. Another thing is, make sure to check your tire pressure often (I check mine every week and even that might not be frequent enough).

It was money well spent. Its fixed and your rim is not trashed.

Yeah. It's a bit scrambling for 3 days. But now I have the new wheel and tire and it's safe to drive.
