Check engine light from bumper work?

2023 RWD C300

I was parked in a school parking lot and a student backed into me and hit my rear bumper.

Brought it to MAACO. Just was getting the bumper painted with insurance.

They've had the car for almost 2 weeks. They left the trunk open which drained the battery to critical. The red lights on the app are all around the car, the 4 doors and the back. The doors have said unlocked since they've had the car.

Now, they called me today and said the check engine light is on. What the hell did they do? They are getting an outside scanner to check the check engine light. This has been a comedy of errors.

A drained battery will trigger a cascade of errors, warnings and DTCs.

Will driving the car fix the issue? I added some pics in another reply.

The battery might be depleted to the point of being incapable of starting the car. Buy or borrow a charger -- 10 amps will work faster than a 1 - 2 amp maintainer. Let the battery charge for a full day, and the car should start. Go to an auto store and have the battery checked, and borrow an OBD scanner if the CEL needs to be reset.

Why has it taken 2 weeks to do a bumper repair, and why didn't the repair shop connect a charger while working on it?

They still have the car, say their charger is not working. When I saw the battery was critical on my phone, I told them and they said they turned on the car for a half hour and let it charge via my alternator. They had the car Wednesday to Monday, then found additional damage under the bumper, needed to file an additional claim, get it approved, then get the part. That was this week. They got the car on 7/16. Called me yesterday about the check engine light.

They are charging $250 for the scanner that works with Mercedes software, that’s going to the outside company who has the appropriate equipment. (Master ADAS)

…at the moment, there is no battery warning, it just says doors are unlocked and I see the picture with the red all around the car…plus the check engine light.

$250 should buy the scanner. If you're paying for it, be sure to take it -- everyone should own a scanner.

I believe insurance is paying. Huge ripoff either way. As far as I know, the car starts. I’m wondering if the check engine light will fix itself as the car returns to normal use. And if they destroyed the battery.
