Not all trims have dash camera. My car has just the placeholder.
I opted for a U1000 front and rear dash cam for one main reason. The MB dash cam required you to start it on every trip, probably for privacy reasons. My U1000 w/ an aux battery runs continuously with a parking mode supported by an aux battery. Once you start the car it automatically begins filming.

If you set it to loop recording, it will start automatically when you start the car.
There is no parking mode though.
The car will alert your mercedes me app and take onboard photos if a collision is detected. This happened to me when I was torquing my wheels and and the vehicle slightly rolled forward (sensitive enough to detect a nudge in a parallel parking situation, etc.). You do not need the dashcam featured enabled to have this working. The pictures were high enough quality to detect license plates, people in frame, etc.
If plugged in and USB is live -- there will be drain after car is turned off
If the USB is live after the car is turned off, then the device will be live and draining the battery. The amount of drain depends upon the actual device that is plugged into the USB.
Just found out that there is a 12V cigarette lighter socket installed in car. This is in the left side below the glove box on passenger side. See page 114 of the user manual.

i tried a usb c splitter but apparently its really hard to split the power from data on usb c type
ill post the items i bought below:
1x usb-c to usb adapter cable
2x usb Y splitter
1 x usb to usb-c
this will now let me use a usb-c wireless charger AND a usb stick with music on .

Autostart seems to be country dependent. The whole dashcam feature is country dependent but without any good reason. Try to push your dealer to really figure out why the option does not work for you. UK should be same as existing EU countries but it even varies between EU countries (i.e. autostart missing in some countries that have the dashcam feature, some have it). Different legislation does not explain this.
