Is there a way to leave the car on but prevent it from being stolen

Yes, that was the answer I was looking for to my question. I thought so, that would make sense but what about if the vehicle is in Park like how OP will do it when he crawls outside of the car? I guess you still can't open the trunk from outside?
It is strange actually and might indeed depend on the MB model, I hear stories of people's trunk being opened during an automatic car wash, obviously they kept the engine on and running, doors locked, so how did that still happen other than the trunk/tailgate detecting the key near the foot sensor but it doesn't make sense as the key is nowhere close to that.

That seriously is part of the reason I have windows tinted how I do....plus, I work with many Ophthalmologists who "wrote a note" allowing my tint to be "legal".
