Driving Mode Default
COMFORT is the default mode that Mercedes has decided is good for you. You can change settings to enable it to ask you at start but this only works if you selected ECO for your last drive (Mercedes has decided this mode is not good for you). If you missed the flash by option to change mode during a drive, then it will not ask you again.
Is my understanding correct?

Comfort is the all-round mode for normal driving, giving full power and throttle response and 100% HVAC and the mode the car was homologated in. The latter requires it to be the default mode per regulation. MB is not allowed to make any of the other modes the default mode as the EPA certification and everything was done in Comfort mode. Per regulation, the other modes have to be deliberately selected by the driver, so that's why the best they can offer is that 3 second prompt where you have to deliberately confirm that you want the previous mode restored. They also wouldn't wanna do the homologation in ECO mode, because as said in hot climates ECO mode may not sufficiently cool the interior.
The default mode can be changed via coding if you really want to. You'll have to contact one of the remote coders that frequent this forum such as BenzNinja.

I had two c300s coded for mode memory so it doesn't automatically revert to comfort every start. Definitely convenient, but it may not be worth the price if that's all you're interested in coding.

if you want feel free to contact us to get it coded:
