Opinion please.. AMG Performance Package for CLS63.

Hi guys...

I need opinions on the AMG Performance Package. I am ordering the CLS63, in Indonesia this car cost US$270,000,- and the AMG performance package is an additional of $27,000,-.

I know that OE Tuning can re-map it, but how about the other accessories that comes with it. Is it worth it?

Thanks

In my opinion, you don't need to take AMG performance package if you're going to mod the car.

Those $27K can be utilized for aftermarket wheels/tires, suspension upgrade (if available), ECU tune, exhaust, etc

When are you going to take delivery of the car?

I am in HK and tax is high here also. I just bought the same car without the performance package. Reason is simple. A tuning gets the performance curve up, so no need for the package. Ceramic breaks are one of the most expensive components and chances you do not need it if you are not track racing. Wheels you can get a Brabus etc much cheaper after market. I happen to quite like the AMG wheels that comes with it. SO the short answer is, if you are wondering about it, do not buy it. If you "need" it, you won't be asking us here. Simple answer. Hope this helps

it includes the tune, ceramic breaks, 20"AMG wheels, better leather inside. I cannot remember the rest but these are the main ones.

06 CLS55 w/ P030, 05 Jag S Type R, 05 TBird-68 Dodge Charger R/T-440 w/4speed I'm original owner
I got it on my 06 CLS55-+$10k extra
Worth every penny
It adds LSD besides the upgraded lightweight wheels, raises top speed to 186mph along with hi speed tires, stiffer suspension and knowing you have a somewhat rare option
Going with a tune helps but it's better doing the tune with the per pac
Good luck

Beware if you get the carbon ceramic brakes
Just replaced the front rotors on my 06 CLS 55 with Per Pack and compound rotors-not ceramics. MB cost part only $1100. ea
Ceramics are a couple of grand ea and 4 wheel mb dealer brake job about $40k-Not kidding

In the U.S. the Performance Package provides the following:

Carbon fiber trunklid spoiler;
Carbon fiber engine cover;
Red brake calipers;
Top speed raised to 186 mph;
AMG Performance steering wheel;
Sport suspension;
Additional power (550 hp and 590 lb-ft).

It is a $7,300 option. To me, the price is high for what you get. The additional power seems nice, but it is not that much more to make any appreciable difference in acceleration over the base AMG engine. When you reach over 500hp, the additional amount of power needed to go quicker becomes extremely exponential. On top of that, the MB traction controls limit the power to the wheels (even when they are turned off). The MB figures for 0-60 times reflect a .1 second difference between the 2 engines.

The red brake calipers do not look right to me on a luxury sport car such as the CLS, and the suede type covering on the steering wheel becomes impossible to clean over time. Nothing has been written on what the difference is in the "sport" suspension. The carbon fiber spoiler and engine covers are nice accents.

I think you nailed it. The CLS63 already has 2 suspension modes - why bother for a third one? I completely agree on the Suede steering wheel - I actually test drove the Bronze matte model and did not like the Suede steering wheel at all. I was questioning myself if I made a mistake in not ordering the Performance Package but that $7K will be used on a set of HRE wheels & tires, lowering the car and eventually 3rd-party ECU upgrade.

I got it also. I felt that the engineers at MB are the most capable persons for the upgraded tune.

I had 10,000+ miles on my 2007 Lamborghini LP640 and I had Lamborghini Dallas checking them all the time for wear but they did not wear at all. I suspect brakes are all about how you use them and COOL them.

"If you don't spend the money you will never now what you missed!" No one wants to spend that kind of money on a car and it hurts when you write the check!

But it is the Package that makes the car unique!

Just my opinion.

Having the performance package is a nice touch, but most buyers have no idea what it is. When it comes time to sell the car, that lack of knowledge is even more prevalent in the secondary market.

When I get a request for a car and I present a more expensive AMG with the PP, vey few buyers know what it is, and fewer are willing to pay extra for it. I would want it, but I am an enthusiast.

If MB is now offering true carbon ceramic brakes, they will probably last the life of the car, unless they are hugely abused. In the real world, the only thing they do for you is add bragging rights at coffee with the boys.

Thank God I didn't grow up to be like you! You have an F40 and when it comes time to sell it I suppose you will here comments like, "I can't climb over the carbon side sills to enter the car"! I don't think you or I buy cars to satisfy the "next" buyer!

But as a Dad I would say the same things to my sons!

Enjoy!
