Carbon Ceramics

Aright, here's the situation:

The Carbon Ceramics are not officially available in the US yet, so I could not order them as part of my vehicle from the factory. I've found some information (a member here as well as my local MB Guru), and the price to order / install will push $20,000. For those on the forum that have these brakes, I have a couple questions:

1. Are they worth that much $$$?

2. How long do they take to come up to temp before they behave like "normal" brakes?

3. Any other insights?

Thanks

Good that you have found a price for the breaks, as for the breaks behavior they are like normal from the dead start they don't need to be heated, to say the truth I think it wouldn't be worth the extra 20k, you could use the money towards maybe increasing the performance maybe some new wheels or anything else on the car, your breaks are fine, if you would change them do that when they need to be changed at the moment just enjoy her as it is and put the money in something else

+1

But if you are a car max option guy and just want to have all the bells and whistles then go for it. Just remember, if you need to replace the rotors (if you keep the car for a while) they run about $4K each and the Stealer Dealer 4 wheel carbon ceramic brake job on a comparable equipped SLS is about $40K. Just beware if you need to replace these that you might have to mortagage your house.

Thanks for the input - I think I'll probably buy the parts but wait & change them once the original brakes wear out. The $20k price tag is definitely steep & maintenance costs will also rack up, but (yes) I am a max option / best of the best kind of guy. Also, this money is earmarked for the vehicle / I'd like to keep everything else either stock or OEM. So lots of factors, but I appreciate the advice.

I can't remotely support anyone doing this. It's hardly as if you are getting even the smallest value for money. Ceramic rotors make sense in racing becasue even 1 tenth of a second counts. Nobody buying a CLS is that invested in the absolutely maximum braking thresholds. This seems like a more money than brains upgrade. I am all for upgrading your car, but at this cost you either have to be obscenely wealthy, or actually uninterested in actual performance and more interested in telling people they have 20 thousand dollar brakes....

If you want better brakes:

Can do the brembo route:
CLS63 AMG Front (C218) 2012 > 6 B,R,S,Y,GT-R 405x34mm 2-Piece 1N1.9521A (DRILLED) 1N2.9521A (SLOTTED) $4,650
CLS63 AMG Rear (C218) 2012 > 4 B,R,S,Y,GT-R 380x28mm 2-Piece 2P1.9026A (DRILLED) 2P2.9026A (SLOTTED) $3,495
Your stock brakes are worth about $3k on ebay etc.

the nice thing is these calipers have a ton of options for more aggressive race pads if you needed them.

CC brakes will last 4 times longer then iron rotors, great heat dissipation and virtually no brake fade. I think they are worth it, but they're too expensive.

A guy that lives up my street actually has a CLS63 with carbon ceramic brakes.

Here is a pic I took with my Blackberry.

And Iron disc replacements cost 1/10th the cost, so you could do 10 replacements for the cost of 1 carbon set. and nobody is driving a CLS to the point of fade with 405mm brembos...NOBODY!

Again I stand by the assertion that these are for people with ridiculous money more concerned with saying they have the best of the best and spent 20K on brakes, than actually being a viable performance upgrade thye will in any way use. But hey , it's your money...

The Brembos are a fantastic alternative to the CC's.

Unless you plan on heavy track use, I don't think CCBs are really necessary.

I had the Brembo 405mm and 380mm on my CLS and they were amazing.
