This is what this forum is about! Helping others. If anyone has any questions please feel free to reach out to me I will help in anyway I can.

Rosco B.

I live in Cincinnati but travel for my job. our headquarters is in Charlotte NC.

Oh BTW I am almost certain my drivers side wheel bearing is going bad. YEP gonna do it myself

. I have not researched the job yet but have asked my SME who owns a EURO Car repair shop in Ft Myers Florida if it is doable he said not that bad of a job.

And if I can do it, anyone can do it . Pics will be posted and a little write up coming if not one here already.

Just did all 4 cam sensors and air filters in garage as preventative maintenance. I didn’t have symptoms but wanted tot get ahead of it.

Entire job took 45 minutes or less with basic hand tools. Anyone could and should do this.

Is this also an issue on the 14s?

I just picked up a 14 and had misfires on several cylinders, 4 to be exact, maybe even the same ones. Just put new plugs in, one coil must've been bad because plug was soaked, putting in all new coils. But the car has 55k miles, doubt this has been done.

Pull those Cam Senors

Just do a quick inspection my friend not sure about the 14s Scroll up and in my picture thread the BAD or faulty cam sensor number is plain to see.
I would still just inspect them rather than check the parts number it should take 20-30 minutes to inspect

New to the forum gang and hopeful I came across the smoking gun when I found this thread. I know it's titled for the 63AMG but I think my engine is identical (W218)

2012 CLS 550 4Matic with 61 000KM.

I have a very intermittent problem with rough idle and a "check eng" light that comes on with P2096 code. I already did the associated O2 sensor with this code and was now considering doing all the spark plugs and try and perhaps troubleshoot a bad coil (dreading the coils as it looks like a difficult job) but perhaps this is my problem. Going to follow the tips and pics and check these sensors later today.

If youve never done coils, just do them all. And all the plugs. And the cam sensors. Easy do it yourself fixes. Cam sensors $46 each, plugs $175 for all and coils $70 each.

Thanks for the reply, I figured it's time to do plugs anyway but is coils also a routine changeover at this age/mileage?

btw....got my sensors off and yup, all 4 harnesses filled with oil! Wow and to think the dealership didn't have the knowledge to consider this issue when my rough idle and o2 sensor CEL messages were popping up over the past year. All they could tell me was that a lot of troubleshooting would have to happen to "isolate" this issue. I would say I'm an avg. DIY'er but had I not stumbled across this thread there is no way I would've figured to go this direction with my problem.

Now to find the proper (superseded) replacement sensors here in Canada.

I have a 2014 E63s. Would these be the same Cam Shaft position sensors I would need as well. Not sure if it's the same M157 engine. If someone could supply a link I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Thanks for all the info everyone! It helped me tremendously!!

I just posted the following on a different thread that also talked about the same issue:

"My car is not misfiring but it has rough idle condition. While stationery, the car shudders/shakes with consistent periodicity. It is not really that bad but still noticeable.

After reading this thread, I checked the sensors and they all had oil in them. I have replaced all four of them but the rough idle condition is still there.

I haven't replaced the spark plugs yet. That's next on the list.

Any other ideas or what to look for?"

By the way, I bought the sensors from a local Mercedes dealer for $52 a piece.

In the exact same boat as you my friend. After doing the sensors I thought my issue was fixed but a few weeks later it came back. Same thing, don't notice any misfire or issue when driving but every few starts I get a very rough idle and it shakes the car for me too. Wondering now if I'm left with having to do all the spark plugs but I just find that unlikely to be the culprit having less than 40k miles on it. I'm also considering taking those cam sensors off again and seeing if any oil has found it's way back into the newly replaced ones.

So before replacing the old ones with the new sensors, I simply cleaned the original ones and put them back on. A day later I checked them and all of them had oil in them again.I noticed the seal on these sensors but there is oil inside the body as well (where these sensors go in). I thought the reason for the seal is to prevent the oil from 'coming out'. The sensors seem to be magnetic (or electro-magnetic) so I am not sure why do they go bad in the first place (that is why I experimented with just cleaning and re-installing them first). Alas, it didn't work but neither did the new ones :-(

I have 50K miles on the car now. Bought it new. It's a 2013 with P30 package and I have recently put Eurocharged Tune on it. Not sure, if that was the root cause for this problem or it is just co-incidental.

In my case, there is no power loss. When the car is not idle, you can't tell there's anything wrong with it.

I also checked for codes using a Bluetooth adapter and an app called Torque. It didn't show any codes.

I also doubt the spark plugs are the culprits either. But I have ordered new ones to rule that out.

Do this

clean off your ECU.... A MUST DO part of this fix. Your ECU has oil on the pins - You might have to clean it off several different times!! Spark plugs are not your issue my friend.

I took the harness/connector off my ECU during this repair as I had heard it could be dirty as well but mine looked completely dry and clean at that time.

So I finally got to it....and checked my ECU....it is squeaky clean with absolutely no trace of any oil or dirt.....I still cleaned it.....but it has not solved the problem.

Any other ideas?

Could it be the coil? MAF?
