Hi all, I am looking to buy a preowned 2016 Mercedes Benz CLS63 AMG S. I very much want android auto to be part of the COMAND unit. I was reading that vehicles with a build date of 12/1/15 and greater have the apple carplay and android auto built in. I found a preowned vehicle with a build date 9/28/15 that I am interested in. Can the COMAND unit be updated to add the apple carplay and android auto? It appears it is the same COMAND unit in pre 12/1/15 build cars with a model number 531 COMAND APS NTG5/NTG5.5 so it would logically seem that just a software or firmware update could ad this option.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My car is 10/2014 and my command unit can be updated, therefore I'm pretty sure yours will come with Android Auto enabled or you should be able to upgrade. I drop them an email and they confirm my car can be upgraded.

I confirm, that all CLSxxx with SA531 data card code are CarPlay+AA compatible, you have just to check if COMAND FW is up to date then search eBay for a Mercedes CarPlay unlock

Question, the guy who responded above me said this, "We have to replace a component in the vehicle (including the USB connector port in the car), add a software license and upgrade the firmware in the COMAND system." I do not know more details, I might ask when I book and actually go to do the upgrade.
Regarding replacing USB port this is the answer I have from the company:

Is the above statement the truth I don't know, must trust the company updating the unit.
My car is UK spec, US may be different in some details.

I had activate the car play in My MB 200 using a doongle and it had works at the begininng but now keeps on activation while and android works at first time.

I had check different iphone cables but it keeps in the same Situation telephone keeps showinf the charging symbol every 25-30 secs and then dissapears

The car firmware was update before installing the carplay doongle

Any idea??

The early NTG Audio 20 build between 2015 and 2016 are the same as the newer NTG Audi 20 units that already have CarPlay Android auto enabled.
The only difference is that the sofware installed in the older units does not have CarPlay and Android Auto enabled.
Mercedes-Benz dealers can perform a firmware upgrade and enable CarPlay and Android Auto as well. This procedure typically takes about one to two hours and requires

If you would like to do it yourself, you will have to purchase a simple module that plugs into the OBD2 port and activates the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Yah but I think u also need to buy HW as well...right? For my 2015 CLS they wanted $360 or something to swap the USB ports in the arm rest and upgrade the firmware. I have carplay in another car and rarely used it so decided not to go thru with it.

 

I had CarPlay installed in my CLS400 during January of 2020. They told me I had to swap out the armrest USB ports. They gave that to me at employee pricing, although I believe you don't need it. I believe the only thing different with that is that for USB #2 which is the CarPlay port, they have a tablet design lol. Another user got the CarPlay update and told them to just update the COMAND firmware and told them he doesn't want to swap out the USB area, and it worked. The 1 hour labor cost for the CarPlay update was $200 CAD with taxes. Every other dealer in my area told me they couldn't do it, I provided PDF files to the service manager which stated for 2015 and 2016 cars it was possible.

I already have Carplay enabled in the Commad menu and I have the USB with the Image of tablet. I simply want to have Android auto enabled as well. Can you help me figure out if my system has the correct firmware to do this?
