Newer vs Lower Mileage

I'm looking at a '16 with 66k miles and CPO vs a '14 with 44k miles. Any thoughts on which would be the safer purchase? I like the color combo on the 14 better, but it's far from a deal killer. My last couple (428 and c43) have been leases, so I'm not that familiar with used reliability. Thanks!

Welcome to the forums! Can you provide any more details? Options, number of owners, service work completed? From the info given I'd lean of course towards the one with lower miles. Mine is a 2012 and I have not even hit 65K miles yet I'm the only only owner and have done everything you can to keep everything in perfect working order

Thanks! I've lurked for a long time. My biggest concern is not knowing what's happened with these, and it seems like even a 1 year CPO warranty takes away some of the risk of a complete problem child. I don't think the carvana warranty is worth the napkin it's written on.

No service records that I know of. One is through Carvana (the 14) and the 16 is through MB.

These cars are truly amazing. Loving the color combo on the 2014. I have a 2015 black on brown with almost 51k on it now....had it since I think 44k.

It really is you and your luck but I would think the 14 is the safer choice. Color combo is sweet, CPO, 22k less miles. Mechanically should be pretty much the same (performance-wise , both are awd, etc). I would also look at it like if you were to sell it a couple years down the road...you’re maybe going to be in the 80-90k mile range which might make it harder.

Lots of info on the engine in here and the w212 forums. Also there’s like a checklist of things before buying.

Good luck with which ever one you chose.

Ooooops the 16 is the CPO. Mixed that up.

I guess each has its pros and cons depending on what you want or what your goals are. CPO does give a nice peace of mind tho. If u can get the 14 thoroughly inspected first that would be recommended.

Just something off the top of my head is the mileage at 66K will undoubtedly have some big services coming up and wear items coming up too if they were not addressed earlier: flushing things, brakes and rotors, it's hard to tell what would fail and what won't......but if that is the CPO car, the CPO MAY help to mitigate some of the upcoming need(cost) for larger ticket services....or not. I realize I'm not being as helpful, but with this information it will help all of us to better advise

I appreciate the insight. Unfortunately, I'm not near either car (Carvana hasn't even done their internal inspections yet) and on the '16 all I have is the MB CPO certification to go on (they do say that brakes, tires, etc are all at at least 75% for whatever it's worth). My wife isn't even a help...get what you want..wrap it if you don't like the color! I need her to be a bigger pain

With that being said I personally wouldn't want the headache of taking someone's word for it. Trust these days as well as a companies accountability is sketchy as hell. but if you do go this route at least the CPO car would offer some piece of mind and the fact that any dealer can look up the service already performed and 'advise' you. But again, the dealer only has their own self interest at heart and not yours.
GL to ya!

TBH OP I would probably save up and buy a better, newer car. I would NEVER buy an AMG from Carvana and some really great examples can be had between $50 and $60k right now.

I guess I haven't seen a ton...some with lower miles but no CPOs until you hit the mid-upper 60s. Frankly, it's not about savings it's just where I want to be. Of course, like everyone asking general questions on a message board I'm probably more hopeful than anything.

In general, I would pick a low miles over a new one; 20k miles -> 2 years driving right there. On the other hand, the cars at MB dealer are usually in better shape than the ones for sale at non-dealer, especially CPO cars. I bought 2 CPO cars at MB and BMW dealer before, both in really good condition. I got 2 year CPO to cover all the repairs, 2 years after CPO expired, all I need were regular maintenance.

Thanks...makes sense. I finally checked the Carfax and even though it has been driven a lot for 4 years, the car was maintained well and always at the dealer. Hopefully that means lots of highway miles....

I would not count on the car being in better shape just because a dealer is selling it. CPO cars can still need unforseen service visits.

Please do not operate on 'hopefully'. After further consideration, and finding out you do not have the ability to kick the tires on either car, I would continue to, and refine your search to something closer you can actually get your hands on

My recent tax value, according to the state of North Carolina, is $28K

Don't knock on carvana's warranty. I bought a used CLS 63 and they've paid the full amount to my local dealer and my Indy no questions asked.
