Wheel weight

Renntechs all the way if you want performance. 10 pounds less per wheel, stronger wheel too. They say 1 pound of rotational unsprung weight= 10 pounds of sprung weight. Lets say this is not true and that its not 10, or 7, or even 5.... lets just say 4. 10 pounds on 4 wheels = 40 pounds... in sprung weight at (4x) = 160. Just the wheel difference alone is like taking 160 pounds out of your car. If you do 8 pounds thats 320 pounds.

You car will definitely RIDE better believe it or not, because ride quality on bumps is dependent on wheel weight... handle better, stop better. There is no lighter wheel than the Monolite. If performance matters, its a no brainer.

Also beware of tire weights... they sit at the edge of the rotational mass making the biggest difference. Some are definitely lighter than others. You can see complete weight specs at the tire rack. Michelin PS2... light, very good tire. Don't go too big... it may look good but it will kill your car.
Actually with the extra charge for the phone hardwear it put me just over the 100k mark.

Thanks for the great info! Confirmed what my tech guy told me. He said the Brabus wheels look great but are very heavy, heavier than the already heavy AMG stocks. Never thought wheel weight would make such a huge impact on performance. Not that I'm racing for 10ths of seconds on a track but sounds like Renntech is a good way to go.

Its all relative, I think the Brabus are just over 32 pounds, the AMG factory wheels are about 29.... these are both comparably light still, a lot of the aftermarket wheels, especially 20", especially chrome ones, are well into the high 30's and low 40's. I have seen Lexani wheels as high as 50.

The monolites are 20. Its freaky... they feel like plastic when you pick them up. I lift them with one finger.

I just checked the Tire Rack and a PS2 rear tire 285/30 YR19 weighs 28 lbs and a 305/30 YR19 weighs 29 lbs., and a PS2 front tire 255/35 YR19 weighs 25 lbs. and a 265/35 YR19 weighs 25 lbs and a 275/30 YR19 weighs 25 lbs. So size does not affect the weight/performance envelope for the CLS55 when using PS2 tires. - Bob

well even a couple of pounds on the outer edge of the rotating mass can make a difference, so beware... but PS2 in general is a light and very well built tire. There can be some differences as much as 5 pounds between different tires.

Going with the K1 (Pulley + ECU). If that brings me the 520hp and 750 torque that they claim I'll be a happy camper. Also curious how loosing 10lbs on each wheel will help the total package. We'll see.

Good choice on the K1! 10lbs each corner should help! I'm saving up for a set of C20's in 19's that is 19lbs per wheel and should definitely help with my setup.

Sprung and Un-Sprung Weight

I found there is a huge debate on the effects and differences between sprung and unsprung weight. Here are a few links that seem to explain it best. From all the reading I have gathered that a lighter wheel setup can only improve performance. While they may not be the equivalent of 1lb of un-sprung =10lbs of sprung they do require less power to rotate and also give better handling and traction. Read up for your self. You might want to pop an aspirin before jumping into it.

Are you going to get a dyno done before and after the K1? That would be a great idea to see what the real world results of the K1 upgrade really are. I'm also possibly interested in doing the K1 when my car comes in around Dec-Jan

They do not have one where it's being installed but I will go to a local dyno for a before and after.

When are you planning on getting the K1 installed? How much does it cost?

Speed Thrills,
Congrats! What a beautfiul car and kudos for your choice in color. IMO, the black best suits the lines of the gorgeous CLS
Please post pics of the front of the car, you left out the best part. Oh, and please make it high res so I can wallpaper it

Either monoblocks or renntechs will suit the car fine. If I were leaning in a direction, I would prob. pick the monoblocks

I was going towards the monoblocks as well but I like the lip and look of the renntechs and with the 15lb difference per wheel renntech it is. Not to mention saving $2500. Getting my "before" Dyno on Sat so I will post the results.
