55 or 63

I am thinking to upgrade my CLS lately... should I just pick up the 55 with 030 package or wait until end of next year to get the 63? I am worry if I get the 55 next Feb then end of next year I will regret when 63 arrives... Appreciated all advices in advance.

If you are going to mod, I would say get the 55 with the 030 package...It is alot easier to mod the 55 motor the it will be with the 63 motor...IMHO...

The best way to answer that question as I did is to ask yourself HOW you like to drive and HOW you like the car's pull to feel. The 55 motors will have TONS of thrust down low to propel you from a stop. The 63 motors will need to be higher in revs to get "that feeling" if it ever does come.

If you road course the car then perhaps the 63 might be your preference because of the 7 forward gears. If you like to street race or take you car to the strip then I'm afraid there no contest, get the 55.

My experience with naturally aspirated motors is that they will never feel like a supercharged motor down low and the supercharged car is MUCH more fun to drive, hence I supercharged my 04 Z06, what a freaking blast, plus trapping at speeds over 127mph a real plus, not to mention the low and midrange power was simply neck breaking.

I got mine this year for that very reason

I was wondering the same and checked around. If you look at the specs for the 63 engine the torque exists at higher RPMs with 369 @ 2000 rpm and 413 @ 3000. Maximum is only 465 lb-ft at 5200 revs compared with the blown engine's 517 between 2,650-4,500 rpm.
I decided to go with the 55 because it seems best for what I do around town.

The more I think about this question, the more I agree with the guys telling you the 55 is the way to go. The newest thing may not be the best thing for you or me. Like the rest of the guys, I admit I am not a driver per se, rather a cruiser on the highways (of Florida). I know the rush of the 55 at the takeoff and the passing power between 70 to 100 and I am not sure that the 63 would do the same...time will tell.

The 55 w/ the 030 package and touch of Kleeman/Renntech can only bring smile to my face and a lot others. It is nice to have the choices we have...

Thanks a lot for all your advice so far. Now, should I get the 030 package? I'm thinking to get 20's. With the $10K 030 package, I can get a nice set of 20s for $6K and still another $4K left to mod pulley, chip... Yes, I will lost the 030 brake set up...

Get the 030 package...20's will be a rougher ride and the LSD is included. The 10K seems to be a fair price, especially when you figure in the warranty coverage on the upgrade(s).

Dont under estimate the Mod packages. With just the K1 mod I dynoed over 550 ft/lbs of torque (close to 100 ft/lbs gain) and 460 rwhp! You'll never get anything like that from the 030 option. Granted the LSD is good to have but you can also have that done as well and still be over $2k ahead towards wheels or whatever. I have been putting Vipers and Porsche Turbos ect to shame all with the ESP on. Just floor and go. Auto-Kill. Gotta love it.

P.S. I also have Rentech 20's and the ride is great. Very little difference from stock.

Speed Thrills,

From your signature, I see you have 55 now and jump to 63 as soon as they come out. Can you share with me what makes you do that?

Thanks in advance.

Well I'm looking forward to the new CL body style and preffer a 2 door. If the new CL had the 55 option I would get that. I will most likely not mod that car other than wheels. I am also very high on the list for the new SL63 as well. I have found it never hurts to leave a deposit and be top 10 or better on the list. Most of the time I have been the starter of the list by asking as soon as I hear of or see spy photos. Worst case I pass and sell my position if it's going for a decent amount over sticker and the new CL and SL AMGs will be in high demand.

Not all 20's are created equal and the type of rubber w/ the 20's do count as far as ride quality. The Renntech's you have are lightweight and strong, which may make a difference...experts please chime in...

IMO my perfect combo purchase: CLS55 030 package w/ K2/3 upgrade (pulley/headers/ECU...etc...), Evotech brake upgrade, and lightweight 19's on PS2 rubber. Oh...Black w/piano black wood. I'm not asking for much... :v
