CLS 030 - LSD Debate
would love all those that know (or think that they know) to chime in here....
The www.mercedes-amg.com site lists the CLS 030 package as having LSD, yet there is nothing in the US literature, sales stickers, option details etc. indicatting that it has the LSD
Informed guys like Shiznick say that the Window Sticker (indicating the differential oil must be replaced at 1800 miles) and the Service booklet (indicating that the differential oil must be replaced between 1000 and 3000 miles) are teh proof that the 030 package has the LSD. Note that both these warnings are 030 specific.
So my question is - if we dont have the LSD (as some of you in the know??? insist), then why do we have specific warnings that relate specifically to the differential, that only appear on the 030 CLS's?
Not looking for speculation, looking for informed answers. I have emailed Rob Allen at AMG on this as I would like it cleared up
If you have it clear in your mind please set me straight and inform me of your source (part #, dealer insider, AMG insider etc.)
Looking to clear the debate.
Hoping this wont deteriorate into the US M5 Launch Control fiasco
1. Turn ESP off
2. Power brake to 2000 RPM
3. Release brake and floor it
If it doesn't have LSD, it will "instant up in smoke uni-track" one of the tires (probably the passenger side). This is what my CL55 does, and my CL55 doesn't have LSD.
I would expect an LSD 55K to instant up in smoke both rear tires.

I agree...this would be the best test.
we need two people with CLS55's. One with 030 and one without. Line them up next bto each other and smoke 'em. there's all the proof you need.....is this correct?

However in my conversation with USA AMG folks, when reviewing the package components, they also said that the rear wheels are NOT 10", but only 9 1/2".

Anybody know?
I have a single page "handout" that I picked up from my dealer regarding the CLS55 030, and it specifically lists the LSD as one of the benefits of the 030.
That's straight from the horse's mouth. Consider it 100000% proof it has LSD.
You might just make a good Mario Limodretti after all.....

Those Sweedes make fine Creme Broulee', don't they?
I think I could handle the limo just fine.
Elevate both rear wheels off the ground. With the parking brake off and the transmission in neutral, rotate one of the rear wheels by hand. If you DO NOT have LSD, the other rear wheel will rotate in the opposite direction. If you DO have LSD, it will rotate in the same direction.
This is a proven technique that works on American cars. I see no reason why it wouldn't work on German iron.
Here is the picture. It's a little blurry but you can make out the words. Look at the 2nd last "feature" on the right side of the picture, it says "AMG Locking Differential"
I can also explain the confusion concerning the rear-wheels (9.5 or 10). They should actually be 9.5. The confusion was caused by MBUSA as they were telling everybody the rear size would be 10, but just before the package went into production, they changed it to 9.5. Please refer to my post "Final content of 030-package" where I pointed out that they changed this size:

Getting the rear diff fluid drained and filled tomorrow afternoon.
Now lets put that to rest haha.
