Expect the CLS63 to start showing up at dealers in the late summer or fall. I think build dates are supposed to begin June or July. Probably most of the CLS63 coming over initially will already be spoken for, or end up as going to flippers trying to sell low mileage "used cars" at well above MSRP.

The 55 and 63 engines are fantastic. Theoretically, below 100mph the 55 should have a bit of advantage with its massive torque, above that the 63 will probably be quicker because of its high revving engine and extra HP. From specs MBZ has posted, the 55 gets slightly better fuel economy than the 63. I doubt that anyone buying one of these cars will care much about that, but the gaz guzzler tax may be higher on the 63 (it is $1700 on the 55).

How the 7sp tranny will affect performance over the 5sp is an unknown. For me the 5sp seems to have its gears perfectly spaced, and since the CLS55 does not push its limitations you can modify the car to significant enhance power output. How does 640hp, 731 ft-lbs torque sound to you That won't be a possibility with the 63, since the new V8 will already be pushing the limits of what the 7sp transmission can handle.

From a price standpoint, the base MSRP of the 63 will almost certainly be higher, probably by at least $1-2k. Also MBZ seems to be grouping a lot of the more common options into packages now, so you may end up spending more money to get the few options you really want. And I doubt there will be any significant discounts on the CLS63 for quite a while, unless buyers decide to settle for the CLS550 which will have power in between the current CLS500 and CLS55 but without the other AMG enhancements.

There were, maybe still are, some good deals to be had on the CLS55 -- I got about $6k back from MSRP on a new one from an out of state dealer (mainly because it came with a pricey Designo package) at the end of April. There aren't many used or new CLS55 on Ebay, and I don't believe any new cars are arriving from Germany at this point. If the CLS63 doesn't show up until the fall, there may be a vacuum for the AMG CLS for a while.

Either way you will have an awesome car !
