This is a great thread and I thank Kevin for taking the time....so I am clear on the IPOD...if I do the mod....does the steering wheel control still work and does it still charge? or do I lose anything when I jack straight into the aux in jack in the glove box.....Thanks A TON for this post.

Just got my V1 today I will install it and do the ipod connection as well. Not this weekend but the next hopefully I can finish everything up. Good thing you have this write up Kevin this will prove usefull for the install.

Just curious, the instructions above don't include the main install of the Ipod kit, my dealer installed that. Also only the dealer can activate the phone feature which enables you to control the Ipod on the steering wheel. My instructions above are just to fix the low sound quality when using the OEM Ipod kit.

That was ONE TOUGH COVER TO PRY OFF!
But thanks for calling me right away to coach me through it Kevin. It seems there is 2 very stiff plastic hooks on either side of the shifter that is holding the cover down. I had to use a flat metal pry bar to pop it off (and a towel to keep from tearing up the leather side where I braced against it).
Otherwise, you have everything you need in the V1 box to make this happen. I just picked up a Quick Splice from the local auto store to clip in the Ground wire and left the fuse section under the passenger foot panel. This will make it easy to add a remote panel later or change fuses easily. As Kevin stated, he lost his and needed to get the extra parts that he listed.

How about GL550?
I have a 2008 GL550 with the RSE (rear seat entertainment screens) and the ipod integration - both installed at the factory. The SUV is a great ride by the way, but the sound quality of the iPod through the stereo, as many have noted, is just plain terrible
. I have no doubt this fix would improve things for me.
My question - could/should I apply this fix? My concern is that with both the RSE and iPod int. (which I'm betting just uses some sort of Y plug back into the single aux input) I might mess everything up.
There was a time in my younger days when I was quite the car audio guy. Not so much any more, so I'm not inclined to experiment here.
Anyone who's applied this where they already have iPod and RSE?
Thanks.

Work well done as a true master mechanic. thanks for sharing this with us.
I'm considering the K-40 Calibre radar laser detector. I like this because it is blue tooth between the sensors and the head unit and only needs power at the front and rear sensors. The head unit mounts under the dash and has a remote to control on off and volumn functions. The only things that shows are 2 led lights mounted inside the instrument cluster which alerts to the either the front or rear detectors picking up a signal. Thats all there is to the dectector.
The unit you installed is a visible monster on the windsheild and here in CA it's illegal to have any radar detection devices. So to advertise it is a death wish for a ticket.
BTW...Any feed back on the V1 vs the K-40?

PPPP, sorry I do not have any experience with the GL in regards to the Ipod and RSE.
M berman,
Unless the law has changed recently, radar detectors are not illegal in CA.
A laser diffuser is illegal, that unit blocks the laser from hitting your car.
With the V1 mounted right below the rear view mirror, its not that visible.
So my vote is still the V1

I like the clean install of the K40--no visible unit, just 2 blue leds
The reviews I have read put the K-40 out in front especially with the laser diffusers.
With installation I'm quoted $1200.

Hi all,
New to the club. Great info on here. Kevin, I tried popping off the wood panel to fix the ipod sound problem (step 2), but it won't come off. I'm afraid if I pull any harder I might break something. Any recommendations and how to get that thing off without damaging the car?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks!, its a real ***** to get off, it has a metal plate under the wood,
so its a very solid piece. My suggestion is two guys 4 hands, and some towels or gloves so your fingers don't hurt to bad. Pull straight up on it.

Finally got the IPOD fix done after weeks of frustration. My fingers are still sore from pulling off the wood panel!! Thanks again for the info Kevin. Quick question to all who do mod's. Do the mod's affect the warranty of the car? i.e. if i have a amp and a subwoofer installed does that void my warranty if I have an electrical problem in the future?
