CLS55 - too much car for a daily driver?

I'm torn. I drive to and from work in stop and go. Is this too much car for me?

Is a CLK55 a girl car?

Very confused...

Lexus GS - great all round package, but doesn't scream mid life crisis (turning 40)

BMW 550 - better ride, worse ergonomics, exterior has grown on me, but I'm not a BMW guy really....

E550/CLS550 - great cars but I think I need an AMG nameplate, and can pick up a used one for not much more.

S4/S6 - great to have AWD in winter but fuel economy is dismal, and I've been there done that with an A4, need a change

E55 - hmmmm may as well get the CLS since it's so much more beautiful

CL55 - good bargains on used ones right now..hmmmm.....

IS350/G35/A4/335coupe - I think I need a grown ups car now, those are boy toys!

Why is it too much car for you?

CLK55 is NOT a girls car. Just make sure you get the right color.

If you can't handle the Audi S4/6 fuel economy, then you don't want any of the AMG 55s; they're worse. Think RS4 numbers.

OTOH, the 55s all use a very tractable, docile engine. It'll be fine in traffic, but you won't be using the performance potential of the machine.

I am averaging around 14mpg this past year in the CLS55, not the best but consider the performance it's is a good number, my friend average around 8-9 in his Gallardo and the only way he can pull away from me is to go into the mountain twisties.

The car can give you all the performance you need if you want to but it can also be a stop-and-go traffic car.

If you are concerned about wasting gas in traffic may I suggest the Lexus GS450h? It has reasonably good performance and it won't eat up your wallet while you are stuck in traffic.

CLS55
If a person is spending $100k on a car, fuel prices should not be that big of an issue.. And if they are, take a trip to Europe and see how much gas is there

CLS55 = Perfect daiily driver. Nice and nimble when you're slighly on it, a raging beast when you step on it

a few...
Get a CLS55 and tint it.... you will never regret it.

CLS55 is a pretty rare car if you think about it... Not produced for long and then updated immediately. Having traded in my E55 for an M5.... then the M5 for a CLS55... I honestly think that the CLS is the best sports sedan on the market today. It's amazing how much stiffer the chassis is than the E and how much more play turning the ESP off gives you.

Sorry, the car just makes me smile everytime I get out.

Wow. What an endorsement. Better than an M5 and E55?

I'm not even concerned that I can toss it into corners the way I did my A4 but it would be nice. I do like a stiff ride though.

What are the must have options? Air suspension, back up sensors...

Don't drive it hard every day and it won't be "too much car" for everyday. When driven normally these 55 cars are pussie cats.

Do you miss anything about it?

I think if you do a lot of stop and go, high horsepower is not the way to go, in my opinion... it just gugs too much fuel.

but I think Mercedes is going to introduce a hybrid system (or that I've heard). But if you truly are willing on saving gas, Lexus has their GS450h and I've read a lot of good reviews on it.

Life is too short to drive a Prius. In fact, other than driving daily, the only time I drive my car is to golf which is once or twice a month. The rest of the weekends the family is packed away in the minivan.

FWIW my round trip is about 35km's or 21 miles. I thought the SL500 had some sort of intelligent way to shut off cylinders or something?

That is a very wide range of vehicles you are considering.

I used to own a GS400, so while not he new body style, I know it was a solid car all around, but not really great in any one thing. When I purchased it was the fastest auto sedan in the world, but that quickly was put to rest by the M5 and later the E55.

I personally believe, if you are even thinking of the AMG vehicles as TOO much car, that chances are, you don't feel you need the HP. I personally don't feel the GS and the 550 offer enough for me as a daily driver, but then again I can afford plenty more and would never consider them. You on the other hand, still are, which basically means you don't want or need the power.

I would probably take the RS4 over the other vehicles as well, but then you mention fuel economy, and both 55's are miserable in that category. City you will get an average about 14 mpg, Long distance highway driving around 20 mpg.

You are contradicting in a couple of ways, so you yourself have to decide what your priorities are. Are they power? Size/Capacity? Fuel Economy? From what it seem however, the AMG is something you'd like, but doesn't seem to fit what you want from a daily driver.
