Test Drove CLS63

I just test drove a CLS63. Since I own a E55(stock), my perspective is similar to many of you. With the salesperson in the car with me, the first thing I noticed is how much better the suspension is over the E55. I know the setup of the CLS is better than my E55, but it felt tight and even smoother than my E55.

When I floored it, it squat down and took off. No ESP flashing. Just go. When it shifted to 2nd gear the ESP light flashed a few times. Was it fast? Yes. Was it super fast. I wouldn't say that. But, it didn't feel as bad as everybody says it is down low. But, going 0-60 or 0- anything seems faster because all you do is floor it. After I got back into my E55, I floored it and got wheel spin as usual. Even 1/2 throttle will get a little bit of wheel spin. The thing I did noticed is how much more control the CLS63 was compared to my car. I felt confident in flooring it at anytime, while in the E55 I always have to be concern about excess wheel spin. Also, I floored it at various speed and each time the CLS took off. I tried the same route with my E55 and sometimes(like normal), the E55 won't downshift to 1st gear or 2nd gear because of where it is in the rpm range. And when that happens, the CLS would have blown away my E55.

So, the throw you back in the seat torque is not there, but I don't think there is lack of torque either. So all this bashing is really unnecesary. I think each person should test drive one first before making any comments. I was surprised I actually liked it since I love the low end torque of the E55 so much. But, the confidence in driving the CLS63 was so so nice.

You sound like you are an MB salesperson to make a statement like that.

I'm sure opinions will change over time, I've yet to drive a 63 car, but I'm willing to accept sacrifices for upgrades to other aspects that needed attention, the 55K cars are all about "easy in and flying out" of turns, now it will be more along the lines of "flying in and flying out" so I hardly call that a downgrade, the low-end torque shall be missed, but if getting from one side of the mountain to the other faster is where we're at, count me in. I'm looking at a newer AMG sometime soon, and I think the best way to go is to keep my SL55 and have the best of both worlds, I am looking forward to the mountains once I take part in the purchase of another great product of MB and AMG.
