What mode shifts the fastest ???

My experience, if you don't shift at precisely the proper moment (in the lower gears, especially) you redline! I keep it is S mode and downshift and let the car's computer do the rest...BUT if I can shift FASTER in M then I really need to practice up...

QUESTIONS:
Is it really possible to shift faster in M mode than in S mode???
Does it say something about shift times in the manual to prove this ?

I am pretty sure I read somewhere that M mode means 35% faster shifting. But, I think S mode is your best bet, just downshift and let the computer do all the work. I still find that M mode has enough of a delay to bother me. But this is on the 5 speed, the 7 speed is probably quicker shifting.

Actually the 7-speed delay is still a pain in the ****. I put it on the oil/temp screen and I shift when the screen turns red, that gives me consistant shifts but it still shifts before peak. I think you'd need a long day in the track to practice the best shift points where the S-mode (Shifted down) gives you nearly perfect shifts each time.

Shifts in M-Mode without a doubt is quicker.
Have had a few races, Shifts on S-mode on lower gears isn't as smooth as when you do it yourself on M-Mode.
The only way you'll find out that significant difference is when your racing and you don't wanna lose. Thats when every second matters...
Loving the Red screen at red line, with practice, we should be able to get shifts as close as possible to Maximum Red line

great thread!! my 63 occasionally breaks down completely when i hit redline in 1st or 2nd and am shifting --- it's almost like a limiter kicks in and shuts off the throtle. Anyone had this problem or am I headed for a MB tech??

I have the same problem when I miss the shift point. It won't shift again for a second or so which is annoying as all heck. That's why I won't risk using it in a race that I know I can win without it.

also during this second, you are very likley in the red.

I wonder how much engine damage would occur if you keep doing that ?

Exactly what I was referring to...it seems as if a limiter kicks in...your body gets thrown forward until the next gear hits...I have a tough time telling the difference between the shift quickness...I wish a MB tech was around to answer this...I'll put a call in to MB USA...they have one or two AMG specialists on staff...they were in FL for the AMG meet a few months ago...I'll fill everyone in when I get an answer...

I have the m-mode shift down pretty good. A little practice with the stereo sound down you can just hear the sound of the engine just before peak and switch. If you change gears right before max redline there's only a slight delay (insignificant). After a few practice runs, you start to get the hand of it.
There certainly is an advantage when in Manual mode.
MB claims the 63 does 0-60 in 4.3 seconds. I might be wrong, but I believe the only way to accomplish this is in M-Mode.
After about 60 to 90 minutes of practice and a full tank of gas, you'll have it down.

If you leave it in M mode and take off in 1st will it shift by itself?

Not in the 63. Unless it does so after it's been in redline for a looooong time cause I have tried this (by accident, unfortunately) and it never shifted out.

i doubt its faster in m, my top speed run in an e55, i used m mode and you can hear when i press the button to shift and when the shifts actually occur, you need to time them perfect (i think i got them pretty close to perfect ) or else you ****ed in a race. not worth the risk, and i doubt that the transmission actually shifts faster in m.

this is a good way to lose to a jeep..While M allows you access to the complete powerband it also exposes some real driver error(missed shift points) will jerk the car around and cause a delay. So far s mode is as quick as I can get until I master the paddles. More video games.
