Charcoal filter removal (instructions + pix)

I took some pix in case anyone is wondering what filters to remove:

Okay here it is. The area in yellow is what houses the filters. but there are two sets of filters in here. one set (the bigger thicker ones are just your air filters, you neeeeeeed those!!! the ones you want to remove are the ones that are actually inside that plastic piece. I have posted a picture of what they look like. You might want to remove the cover (in red) for easier access.

this is what they look like:

Alright, just got it back from the dealership for the under 2k service and now it is time to take out those charcoal filters. Anything I need to know as far us do I need to disconnect the battery or any other sensors, or do I just rip it out al-natural. Going to do it tommorow as long as I have time.

Just make sure you have the correct tool for the screws. Star shaped alan wrench type stuff? Anyone know the correct tool I have one but am clueless to what it is called, I know it is not a Phillips. Also remove the plastic front covering the engine to make getting the filters out easier. Check out all the pics here prior to starting and do not pull out the wrong one like I did. It is really easy if you read the thread and the diagram first. Hopefully domeone can give you the name of that toool to unscrew the screws. Medium size star shaped screw..Sorry wish I could help more. You are going to be suprised at the outcome. LOL

Those are Torx screws. And hence a torx screw driver is required.

No sensors or any problems so far. I think Vadim has some real specific posts on the purpose of the grey filters. 18 hp seems to be the gain from the dyno that was posted here by Vadim via/EVOSPORT. I likely will head down there soon

Alright, so after getting the car back from the dealer for the 2k service, operation charcoal filter deletion is complete. No major problems, just one of the snaps on the front of the engine cover fell off during the removal process. A long magnet was all that was needed to retrieve it. After removing the airboxes, I noticed some dirt in there and vacuumed it out, is that normal?? I think it might be. It was refreshing to see made in Germany on the charcoal pieces, better than Thailand or some other crap I guess. As far as the but dyno, didnt really notice too much but I didnt really drive it hard before doing it because I didnt want to heat up the engine bay too much. I did notice a slight sound at idle that sounded different, sort of a throaty tuut tuut tuut. Is that just the sound of the air getting sucked in? To be honest I have never really listened to it before with the radio off so possible it is just paranoia. Anyone else notice a slight difference in sound?

For sure the throttle sound is louder as well as idle check it out roll down you windo and shift to m1, definately a louder throtier exhaust note. Dirt was in mine as well, and all those brakets came off, i used the wifes little skinny arms to reach down and retrieve. Time for you to take the skirt off and put the pedal down. LOL (kidding man). Congrats on the successful removal of the charcoal restrictors

Hey, no skirt here. I pulled a 15-102 run about five minutes after the removal. Car shifted out of third right at 102, pretty crazy to be above 100 and have 4 gears left. Then I pulled my first ESP off hole shot out in front of the guys house who helped me on my way back home. Had it in M and let off after I shifted out of first but I guarantee if I shifted it and kept on the gas I could have gone for a while without it catching completely. The car is definitely addicting.
