removing door lock pin surrounds

I know this is probably a lame question, but I couldn't find any good info using search...

I've got some nice chrome door lock pins and surrounds I'm trying to install, but I can't figure out how to get the existing surrounds out. I read in another thread that they should pop out, but I've tried using quite a bit of force to do so without any luck, and I don't want to break anything. My new surrounds are threaded which makes me think that the existing surrounds are threaded as well -- if so, how do I unscrew them? I've tried various things to get a grip on them to twist them, with no luck.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I assume you have a 55 according to your signature? If so then yes they just screw off, righty tighty lefty loosey. If for some reason you have a 63 then they do not screw off, and I don't have a clue how they do come off.
On a side note, if you have the round chrome trip like in the pic below, I left the existing black piece on and just added the round chrome piece over it.

Before..

after...

Kevin, thanks so much for the info!

Any pointers on what to use to grab the surrounds when I unscrew them? I can't seem to get a grip on the outside of them, and i tried to grab them by inserting some pliers into the hole and then opening the pliers to hopefully grab the surround from the inside, but neither worked. But then again, I didn't try _too_ hard since I wasn't sure if I was barking up the right tree or not.

You know, now I'm re-reading your post and I'm not sure if you're talking about removing the door lock pins (which yes, I easily unscrewed) or the surrounds...I think you might be talking about leaving the existing surrounds on, since you talked about leaving "the black piece on" and "putting the chrome piece over it". My chrome surrounds wouldn't fit over, since they're set-up to screw in.

I've included an image of what I have to hopefully clarify the raw materials I'm working with.

Any additional advice?

yep, just keep unscrewing the knob, slightly pulling up at the same time. from what i remember, it takes a lot of turning , i placed the chrome surrounding over the original one, as well.

hmm, your chrome surrounding does look different from mine. the ones i got, has double sided tape inside and you just place it over the original black surrounding.

Ahh, yes you are trying to remove the black round piece. That I can't help you with, all the ones that I've seen are just covers as seen below.. I honestly don't know if they screw off or not on the CLS. The ones you have may fit another Mercedes.

Alright...it looks like although my PINS will work, my surrounds won't -- they are, upon closer inspection, smaller in overall outside diameter than the stock surrounds on my car.

Kevin, where did you get yours? I found these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Merce...spagenameZWDVW -- but they look more curved (convex?) than yours.

Not sure if he just sells the surrounds though, doesn't hurt to ask

surround removal for black, OEM surrounds
Take jumbo paper clip. Bend 90º on one end...yet still allowing the bend to
be inserted down into the the surround (threaded door pull removed). Pull
up to assist in lifting the surround up. Work your way around. You should
be able to get enough clearance to grab the surround with needle nose or
hemostat.

Surround is thin, cheap plastic. It isn't spiral threaded, rather ridged to keep
the surround from pulling out easily.

Argh! My pins won't even fit...sigh.

I think I'm just going to get the set that Kevin referred me to, since he knows that those work -- but I do, of course, have one last little question ;-) In the picture on the auction, it looks like there is a gold/bronze band around the pin...are yours like that? I think that might look weird...

FYI- In the 63's- the surround for the door pins does not come off. It is part of the door panel.

On my 06' 500 i had to basically pull them out... they got tore up but that was the only way to get them out. It was not a screw out thing.. the chrome replacements that i got did not go over them either since they were the same size as the original.. I took needle nose plyers and pulled them out.
goodluck.
