CLS63 VS 2004 Corvette

I had my first race today against a 2003 Vette. It was not a Z06 and the only modifications it had was an aftermarket exhaust (not headers). He jumped me out of the hole about a car and a half. My car was very slow out of the whole, I guess because of the weight. Anyway we stuck there and I figured I would suck him up - didn't happen. We remained at the same gap until about 100 and let off because we ran into traffic.
A few facts for helpful rebuttals:
I was in sport mode and car only has 350 miles.
Was I supposed to win this race? Was I supposed to get him out of the whole? Was I supposed to run him down as I thought I would?
Friends help me out!!!!

I think you would have taken him if the car would have more mileage. Pushing it that hard at 350miles is not good...

I asked about pushing the car that early many times on this forum and got numerous responses to push it hard early. Do you feel that these replies were wrong?

This is a hard question and answers vary. Let me give you another example: In modern turbo cars they also say that you dont need to cool off the car after pushing it hard as it was stated in older turbo cars, but I believe the intercooler shuts off after the engine is off and thus it is better for the life expectancy of the car to cool it. This is just one example. It seems that the 63 engines perform better after more mileage. I have an E55 so I cant say about the 63 engines that much, but atleast I would take it easy on any car for the first miles, whatever anyone says. The engine is new, even though they test it at AMG. This is just one opinnion and the way I do it, I cant say it is the right way to do it. Enjoy your car.

Did you mash the gas to the floor?(not good at start) I bet you started in second gear( put display on gear and oil setting) The car does not always start in first by default. Been there did that. Once you learn how to get these beasts under conrtol, you will Have fun

Its all about the launch, once you get some more miles then just take it out and practice. I tend to power brake it a little, ride the brake with a little throttle, then release and feather the throttle without getting wheel spin, try this with and without ABS.

I'd focus on your launch to ensure a win. Technically you should be beating him.

Juice - where are you? Come back and impart some knowledge on the newbies.

dreid - you should search for posts by Juicee63 on this forum. He went from not finding and launched his car in 2nd gear (assumingly like you) to driving 1 of the fastest 1/4 times with a CLS63. There are many posts also on this forum about running C6Z's, not 04 C5 stock. As many have told you, try launching it in various ways and find the one that works best for you. Buy a G-Tech to get data feedback may be worthwhile if you are really serious. Your car is very capable. Are you? Most of us start out not. But you appear to be willing to learn and ask questions, so train yourself. Juice did and he has a lot of respect here, including mine.

Thumbs up

WOW!! I'm getting kind of Nervous now.... I'm suppose to race a buddy of mine with my CLS63... he has a 2006 vette non Z06... I think he has 405hp... but if you can't get the 2003 I might re-nig. I have notice tho that it will start off in 2nd gear tho... if you jump to M mode.

Cool,
Thanks for the advice. I feel great knowing it is the inexperience of the driver, me, and not the performance of the car. I have a lot to learn but I'm more than willing. I read some previous posts on removing the charcoal filters and did so today. I then followed previous posting instructions and reset my ECU (I think) and went out and practiced starting. My car feels great! I checked the shifts. I was starting in 1st but I think it was shifting early in my race with the Vette. It is now shifting between 7000 and 7100 on all gears and feels very responsive. Needless to say I am demanding a rematch and will keep all informed. Thanks again.
Oh it's funny that you made the comments about Juice, because he is definately one of my favorites to ask advice of. I was reading some older posts and found out that once upon a time he was also green. Now he is the man. Maybe there is some hope for me.
Until the next time...drive fast and be careful

Don't be nervous. I am confident it was the driver and not the car. Please let us know how your race goes.

Juice is all right, don't stoke him too much he's already got a rather large size ego.

Your skills need to catch up to the car. Adding more performance to the car is solving the wrong side of the equation. Get the G- Tech and nail the 0-60ft time.

Seat time is all you need. Drive the car the way you would like it to perform. I am still learning everyday just like you. As far as the ego comment, uh sometimes my enthusiasm for drag racing is mistaken for being a braggert. I just post em as they happen. I was absolutely murdered by a C5 Z06 on the drag strip last time out...Course he was super charged. In a heads up race the C6 stock vs the 63 is as close as racing another 63. Get the jump and you win!!

We need to run. I had the blower installed, and it runs good. 373HP to the wheels.
