Pondering!

As I see someone on the board trying to sell their ride it reminded me of a conversation I had this morning with my cousin.

Although I love my car, I really don't see this model lasting much longer. I don't know how the sales are for it but here is what comes to mind.

I purchased this car because it was bigger then the E, I come to find out that there is no room in the back. This doesn't really matter to me, considering the kids fit perfectly fine in the back. So between the E and the S obviously a price difference does it make sense for MBENZ to continue to make this car?

I see the value of it has taken a huge hit, and I think it's because there is not that much of a reason to pick between the E and the S.

Now I love the car but I don't see my self getting another one, from this car I will go to an S.

I'd like to see what others think about this. Let's try to have an adult conversation here and not let this thread get out of control!

Valid points, but I don't think people buy this car as a family hauler. I would also think that most family's have a big SUV to haul the kids in or 4 adults in. With that in mind its the perfect car for the dad that hauls the kids once in a while but rarely has 4 adults. My situation the car is perfect, I have SUV for taking 4 people comfortably, and no kids, the lines of the car along with the power are unlike any other cars on the market. I believe Mercedes will continue this line for a while, I do believe its a better sell then the CL as well.
As far as the value and the hit, in my opinion if you bought a 06 when they first came out in 04, and you sold after a 12-18 month of ownership you didn't take to big of a hit, since the car was a 06 and was still hard to get. Now of course being 3 years old and selling for mid 60's its still not that bad if you were in the $90k range on purchase, 10% a year is about right.

My thoughts.

I bought the car for looks first then performance. I actually thought about the CLS500 which is the first CLS I had ever seen. I then saw the AMG and the performance stats and bought it instead. The extras were well worth the $$$... I wanted a 4 seat rocketship.

As for discontinuing the line, I just don't think so Carlos. Seems many other car makers are clamoring to make a 4 door coupe these days a la porsche and the Panamera.

I think the car was so far ahead of its time, it will be a keeper for years to come.

Actually this car has created an influx of makers to make a similar car. A car with coupe styling in a 4 door. Aston Martin Rapide, BMW, Audi, Porsche Panamera...etc....all have a similar car "in the works"...Merecdes set the trend. This is the best looking 4 door on the market period. The magazine summed up the cls when it said you may not be able to date a super model, but you sure is hell can buy one. The thing you are looking at is simple...it is called welcome to the world of Mercedes. These cars are great cars...they just don't hold value. Most of that is due to the fact that they mass produce their cars. There is so much demand and they make so much supply, so in the end we as owners suffer.

I'm have 2 little kids and really wanted a high performance car.
I cannot for the life of me think of any other car that fits my needs/wants except maybe the M5...but I am not a BMW fan so this is it. I also agree that this car set a trend where Aston and Porshe are trying to catch up...and those models are still a year or two out.

sorry for the useless post, but just wanted to say this is a great thread... am in the same boat... pondering... our other car is an slk350, love the convertible part of that car, and although we're not planning on kids for another few years, we need a four-seater... I just got rid of my 350z and am torn between the M5 and the CLS, and looks-wise the CLS appeals to me a bit more than the M5.

I feel the S is after another 10 years when I turn 40...

I agree , the CLS looks are hard to match. Its has classic lines and plenty of room, IMHO

M5s are for rich kids. CSLs are for refined individuals....

this is a great topic, as most of you know, my wife drives a 07 M5 and i have the CLS 55 as a daily driver, however i have been considering getting rid of either the M5 or CLS55, but after test driving several different car, even including the new CL and S. i think our CLS is really the perfect car, stylish, powerful, and very unique but i think my next move will be the Bentley GT, as i am currently shopping for one now, in my eyes, the GT is very much like the CLS, price is great, and performance is amazing.

S-Class is nice, but a little too big for me, beside when you order the S with sport kits and everything else, you are pretty much at a Bentley GT price range.. why not take the next step. they have the flying spur if you need 4 door.

bentley is a great car...well the gt or the flying spur that is.

the maserati is a wonderful looking car as well....slow for what it is though. and if you get one you need to get one with the new automatic and not the sequential auto. i had one with the sequential automatic and it was a race car trans in a car that isn't a race car. was not a fan of it at all. the only thing i liked about it was the looks....very much like dating a hot girl with a horrible personality...not sure if the benefits of the looks outweigh everything else that comes with it...

Power

The bigest attraction I have with this car is its brute strength. I love it and i'm about to order my 3rd set of tires ouch!

I do agree with another post about it creating a whole new genre. I would love to know what the sales numbers are for this model. I guess if it continues to be a limited production it will always be popular.

As for the S63, I love big cars yes the bentley is a bentley! I sat in one of them and didn't sit comfortably. I guess it's becuase I'm stuck on big sedans. Now with that said, as the kids are getting older and Grandma and Grandpa are taking on more of the responsibilties the need for big car and SUV just isn't there.

Definately would take the bentley continental! But there WILL ALWAYS BE A BENZ IN THE GARAGE!
