No More CLS

We had some nasty flooding this week in Dallas, and unfortunately it claimed the life of my beautiful CLS55. I was going though some water that wasn't too deep, but a truck came by on the other side of the street and created a mini tidal wave that engulfed the front of my car. It sucked water into the engine and it hydrolocked. The car wouldn't move, and the water got deeper and deeper, and rushed in when I opened the door to get out. Looks like the blown motor, fried electronics, and water damage to the leather and carpet was enough to total it. The bad thing is that my car is totaled, but the good thing is that my car is totaled. It sucks that it is gone, but I'm glad I don't have to drive a rebuilt car. This is my first insurance claim ever, and State Farm has been aces all the way. BTW, I still have my factory chromed AMG wheels and tires for sale, so if any one wants them, shoot me a pm!
RIP, Benzo!

What a shame. It looked soooooooooooo good. But on the bright side, you get the opportunity to purchase all over again. Maybe a CL 63 or CL 65?

a car that gets very poor gas mileage.
Wow, real sorry to hear about that.
I hope State Farm can take care of you quickly without hassles. That should help ease the blow.
Good luck and hope to still see you around these forums.

Damn shame. Though look on the bright side, it gives you a chance to get something new and stop the depreciation ..

Yeah, I would have lost my *** if I sold it, so getting out without losing anything will be nice! It does suck that it's gone though! I don't think I'll get into another MB any time soon though. I'm a little gun shy from the significant loss of value! I can't believe how fast these things have tanked lately! I would love to get a new CL, but I think I'd just be asking for a beating!!

Get a low mileage used one. Find auction price and get as close to wholesale as possible. Every car takes a loss but you will minimize that loss if you buy a car 1 to 2 years old. Get an early model 2007 CL63 and enjoy. Good luck and sorry to hear about your loss.

That's exactly what I did on this one, but it still tanked! Eight months ago when I picked this one up, these things were selling retail for mid to high 70's and now they're in the very low 60's! 2k a month is a BIG drop for a 2 year old car!!

Big Carrot, do you typically purchase or lease your vehicles?
At any rate, the moment you drive a new car off the dealers lot (regardless how you got it) the car loses a tremendous amount of value right there.

Again, I hope you recover quickly from this.

I typically purchase. I was in the car business for a long time, so I know how to buy them right. I bought this one just over average book, and in eight months that same spot in the book is almost 15k less! They don't lose value when you drive them off. People say that all the time, but all you lose is the difference between wholesale and what you paid, which is the dealer's profit, and that's only if you trade it in. If you buy it at wholesale price, you don't lose a dime when you drive it off. New cars are a different story. I've owned a ton of cars, and typically break even if I sell them within 6 months or so. I buy them close to wholesale, and sell them closer to retail. In six months or so, that is usually around the same number, but this car out paced the book. Most of those have been exotics that are a little harder to find, so this is a little different. These cars really have depreciated a lot in the last few months.

Tell me about it! I bought my 2005 CL65 with 16K miles on it for $85K 7 months ago and now it they are in the $60'sK at Manheim. I was close to aution price when I bought it and it just tanked a few months later. No big deal because I do like the car and decided to keep it for a while. It should catch up in about a year or two. I don't think this car will drop too much more once it hits the low $60'sK or high $50'sK. The fit an finish is way too nice and the engine alone is about $40K new.

All AMG's/M's. etc. tank quickly, even if you buy "pre-owned" ones. Take a look at the stocks of Tiffany, Nordstrom, LVMH Moet Hennesy, et al: they are all down significantly, which a lot of mavens thought would not happen b/c the upper end was insulated from the economy. But, that simply did not happen. Furthermore, AMG and now BMW's M div are producing way too many cars and way too many variants. Flooding the mkt and supply and demand, as in any mkt. Nothing necessarily against AMG/M's, et al: just a combo of the 1-2 punch aforesaid.
So who's been "insulated" from this phenomenon: Ferrari's the only one I'm aware of for NEW cars. Why? B/c they very carefully restrict the supply of new cars, do not and will not produce "variants" of existing (non-performance) production cars. Difference between (BS, what I call Texas Timex) Rolexes and Patek Phillpes/Vacheron Constantins/Audemars Piguets. The former is just mass-produced but very nice products v. truly high quality, hand-made, very supply restricted jewels.

That's reality in down markets when the ebullience and drinking the kool aid is dissipated. Does not in any way whatsoever make the AMGs'/M's any less fine automobiles or fabulous cars. It's just how reality in mkts works when the leverage and non-exclusivity is gone.........
