Opinions / Experience please *E55 V. CLS55*

Guys- I have pulled a search on this subject but wanted advice from those who have driven or owned both and your impressions.

I currently have an 03 E55 as a daily driver. I am coming up on a year of ownership and (due to my Auto-ADHD), am unfortunately getting bored.

I LOVE the looks of the CLS over the E hands down. I love my E over other comparable sedans (Audi, BMW etc.) but the sexy looks of the CLS has been distracting me lately.

I have read all the threads regarding the additional weight and possible slower 1/4 times of the CLS. These dont concern me a whole lot as this is my daily driver. Although I drive the car "spiritedly" on a daily basis, a 10th or two of 1 second wont make a big difference to me.

So my question to you that have owned or driven both cars is: what was your impression and why youloved (or not) one over the other.

TIA guys

It is basically the same car with different body panels, there is no major difference except the looks. The platform, chassis and drivetrain are all the same. Obviously the CLS has less interior room and inferior visibility due to its shape.

I'd say reduced visibility when compared to the e. Just because it's shaped differently doesnt make it "inferior".

If you're not concerned with a tenth or two in the 1/4 mile, then most definitely go with the CLS. It is better looking, more exotic, more rare than the E-Class, definitely more unique, very elegant, but still very aggressive.

IMHO (and I've owned both cars, well W211 anyway) the CLS is better simply because it's more rare (not much more rare, but ...) and it looks better to me. Otherwise the cars are the same. I was initially worried about visibility but I have had no issues, and the room inside is less but I'm 6' tall and it has never been an issue. If you routinely carry people in the back seats then it'll be an issue for sure. I don't that often and nowadays we just take someone else's car.

The thing I love about the CLS, is the wonderful positive comments from people of all ages, from young kids to old Grandmas, I get nice car and a thumbs up often, how often does that happen with the E?

I agree from a style perspective, many people think its the fastest and most expensive.

I get comments at the track all the time as to why I would drag race a 150k car.

The car's looks is what got me out of my E55. If you wanna look good and be just as fast lose some of the excess weight.

I disagree with the poster that stated it is the same car. Thats like me saying the CLS interior is comparable to the S class.. CLS interior is nicer than the E.

The back seat has plenty of room for the ladies or , children. I fit and I am 5'11 230

CLS vs E55 for me:

The CLS looks better, no doubt there. It is also more rare. There are a few negatives I don't like though. It costs more for a car that weighs more and has much less functional back seats.

So basically your paying a lot for looks while losing some speed and functionality.

I don't mind paying for looks and so I do prefer the CLS over the E, however, not by a lot

well put-
outta all the cars Ive owned or had the pleasure of driving the Cls seems to attract compliments from the weirdest people that you would never think were into cars. And the car puts a smile on my face everyday I see it.
Excellent car IMO

I like the understated styling of the E, but no doubt the CLS is a real head-turner...such a beautiful car

I don't remember where I heard this but I remember something about the CLS chassis being 40% stiffer than the E. Anyone seen that?

From Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear maybe? CLS looks more sexy than the E no doubt, but I love my E55 which gives out a sleeper look until they look at my lower front grill.

The CLS suspension is definitely stiffer than most of the E-Class models. However, all 2006 model E55s (and even some of the 2005 E55s) shared same suspension parts as CLS55 from that point forward.

The "shocked" look on some of those faces after being beat by a 4400 lbs 4-door sedan is priceless
