CLS63 engine heat?
CLS63 engine heat?
I just picked up an 08' CLS63 yesterday and I have noticed that the engine bay gets extremely hot. Even the front wheel fenders to the point that you can't touch them. Is this normal?
its well known that if you get this and you let it happen alot, that your suspension is going to go BOOM due to the intense heat!
!.....well i had to had my spot of fun. MY guess is its normal and these cars have big engines with big power and the heat you are feeling is just it venting through.
I usually get it to after spirited driving its normal....try popping the hood then u will feel the heat escape

Enjoy and in good health
OMG did you not fix that issue yet?!?!?

My 07 with 9,000 miles don't have any of the issues you described above. It sounds unusual for your car to be this hot.....I will check mine tonight after my commute home.
Btw, does you oil temperature usually stay around 100-112 degrees celcius?

I took it in today to have it looked at and have the oil changed. They replaced an oil sensor, dipstick, and did some type of reprogramming, whatever that meant. I would hope that if the car was overheating in some fashion that I would receive a message in the instrument cluster. Maybe I'm just being paranoid as this is my first pre-owned vehicle..

lexal, it would be a good idea to post your location in your profile, might give some of the members better information when they reply...
im in sunny LA, and my temperature never goes above 102 except on a really sunny day... if the temp outside is 100 (a month ago), it goes up to 105-107

Mine temp normally goes up to 105 to 107. I checked my front bumper tonight after my commute home and both sides of the bumper right after the headlights are very warm but not to the point of sizzling hot. The areas are very small and specific, so you are right that the engine does get pretty hot.

My guess is unless we get the temp warning light, our car should be able to handle the heat.

a car that gets very poor gas mileage.
My oil temp fluctuates anywhere from 103 - 120 Celsius with normal driving and ambient temperature at around the 80's Fahrenheit.
Today, L.A. was in the high 90's F and some 100's F in other places; my oil temp got to 129 C when crawling on the freeway.
Checked the dipstick when I got home and it was around the 3/4 filled mark so there definitely was enough oil.

Hey guys it's all relative.
First, there is approximate 3% (6 degrees in 200) permitted by law for tolerences in gagues.
When the Dealer changed out my instrument cluster, I noticed that my normal running temp of a hair below 100 all of a sudden changed to a hair above 100 with the new instrument cluster. Same car, same condiitons.
I think what we must notice is a change in the normal range of temp, not the actual reading. So if your beast is always at 103, become concerned when under the same conditions it changes to 110.

E63 AMG Temperature issue
Yesterday when I was driving around 5:30pm, outside temperature was approx 85'F It shows 114'F sometimes little higher and lower. Is that normal?
I was on local street, stop and go, stop and go.
Any advice?

I usually fluctuate around the same numbers so I'm sure its normal. It seems like I got a few people paranoid about their engine temperatures too. After having it for about a week I think the extreme engine heat is normal. After all, I'm sure I would get some type of overheating message if that were the case.
You use manul mode during stop and go traffic?

Oh, yeah that temperature is normal.

Forgive my ignorance, but...Does the engine oil bathe the transmission as well? This could explain why my oil temp is higher than most that have posted here.
I drive almost exclusively in Manual mode. Approximately 95% of the time the car is driven in Manual. I would say that I typically hold a gear at 3,600 -3,900 RPM under normal city driving. Highway cruising I drop down to 3,000 - 3,200 RPM.
Just today, the gauge was reading at 123 Celsius and thats on the highway.

I actually got it up to 128 Celcius today after doing a few spirited highway runs. In fahrenheit, thats about 265 degrees. I had no idea engine oil got that hot! Also, whenever I have my drivers side window down, my engine bay sounds exactly like a loud vacuum...I suppose this is normal and is for alleviating the engine heat...
I found this online:
"The ideal operating range for engine oil is 180°F through 200°F. While operating within this range, the oil works as a lubricant, coolant, and cleansing agent in the engine. Modern engines generally run with radiator coolant temperatures between 200°F and 220°F with oil temperature ranges between 20°F and 75°F HOTTER. In other words, when the engine is performing flawlessly, the engine oil is already overheating! Oil that exceeds 220°F rapidly loses its ability to lubricate and cool causing accerlerated fatigue and premature component failure."

I'm wondering if adding an aftermarket oil cooler can bring the temperature down.
