Cheap Mod Thread

Anyone know any fairly inexpensive mods you could do to your CLS?

The only one I know is the AMG startup logo on the command unit.

Shodan01- heres the link

https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...-logo-amg.html

keep in mind that this MAY bring some problems to your gauge cluster (for example- AM channels wont show) and the NAV layuot is different.

Also- this (i BELEIVE) only works for previous generation E-class and CLS-class..... I may be wrong, check it out for yourself.

Were you thinking of lowering your car at all? I did mine for $180 and it still has a fantastic ride.

In my humble opinion - handling becomes more responsive. I did not use the electronic lowering module. In my eyes, spending 2xxx dollars for an electronic solution to a problem that 150 dollar 'lowering links' can solve seems to much like burning money. Sure - it will take probably 3 hours for you to install them, run your car thru 'lift'/'normal' cycles for a status check and to readjust as necessary, however, those 3 hours would save you 18xx dollars. I know we don't have the most economic vehicles in the world but I can't justify spending that extra money to save myself a few hours.

Lowering links fool the vehicles potentiometers. Those sense what position the vehicles suspension is in and will adjust the air struts accordingly. The links make the car think the suspension is higher than what it actually is, thus reducing the amt of air in the struts and bringing the suspension down to (what the computer thinks is) normal levels. They are adjustable and you can tuck rim if you'd like or just give your vehicle a more aggressive stance as I did.

I highly recommend lowering links. Either way - let us know what you end up doing!

Haha, thanks so much for the info! This looks like something I might do when I get back home

Can I see pics of how yours look at lowest ride height? And does the rest of the cars suspension work normally? (for ex. Raise ride height, comfort, sport 1/2)

Air filters are cheap. 100 bucks shipped. I think I noticed gains but I only had the car a few days before those went in so it was hard to tell.

Good call, Hyperion. Also, depending on the color of your car (black i think?) Smoked lenses for your bumper/fender... i think 40-50 bucks shipped.. or for a more solid color match you can have them spray them (lightly) with black paint vs just buy new ones.

I think so but then again folks spend 3k+ on long tube headers for an extra 30hp.. so i guess all in all it's a better price/hp than headers, ya know? Was just hoping someone had some first hand experience.

Bringing this back up... I have a somewhat cheap mod for y'all.

IF you dont want to buy a blacked out side marker for our car for around $50, get plasti-dip! Get some masking tape and newspaper to catch the overspray, and apply about 4-5 coats (depending on how light or heavy your coats are)... This can also be used for doing your emblems and your trims and whatnot.

total cost (assuming you have masking tape or painters tape at home) should be $10.. fairly cheap and saves you some money.

happy modding (or spraying)

Sorry for the stupid question but how would you mask the emblems and not have overspray on the fender?
I will assume what you mean is mask it to avoid the bulk of the overspray and then take off by hand the small overspray? How do you get a clean cut on the lettering?
I really would like to black out the V8 biturbo emblems, the front grill and the back chrome piece but still debating between repaint and plasti dip.

haha, sorry I should have clarifieeedddd... You mask JUST around the emblems and (or) side marker, and you put newspaper around that way there is no way to get it on the paint. Even IF you do get it on the paint, its really easy to remove. Simple clay would do.

There are TONS of videos online for this.

The excess paint you get between lettering and emblem you just separate between the emblem and the body of the car itself (using an exacto knife or box cutter) . Then just peel the ones off the paint. It dries as a rubber like material. So if you do enough coats, itll be thick enough to peel off with your fingers.

Its a GREAT product.

IF you dont want the matte black finish (as you do with the regular bottle) you can get a glossifier and spray on top of the black spray that you did before it.
