Dreaded camshaft adjuster...
As the title states...
I've noticed a noise in my engine so I brought it up to my dealer, after 3 days of inspecting they came to the conclusion its my left bank that's at fault. My S.A says I need both intake and exhaust camshaft adjusters along with intake and exhaust actuators and new lifters and head bolts. The total being $4900. Labor being $1400 and parts being $3500. I have done a bit of research and I have found the same parts, being sold through an authorized re-seller totaling around $1800 (w/o shipping). I'm sure an independent shop can do the labor for $1000 or less. This begs the question, do I go with dealer or do I source it all my self?

The Camshaft adjuster went out on my Audi as well.
If you live in California, that part is covered for 7 years / 70k miles under the emissions warranty.
My SA didn't bring it up until I broke open the warranty manual and pointed to the section that specifically stated that it was covered.

I strongly recommend you check your warranty booklet:
here is a link to the 2011 warranty, which states that the camshaft adjuster is covered under the Federal Emissions warranty:

State Laws
In California, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and Vermont, Mercedes-Benz vehicles are covered for 3-years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, in order to meet these states' stringent anti-smog standards. In addition, certain emission-related parts are covered for 7-years or 70,000 miles, whichever comes first.

So I spoke with my S.A, I got a 15% discount on parts but nothing off of labor. I will be needing 2 new camshaft adjusters one intake and one exhaust one intake actuator one exhaust actuator. I may or may not need new head bolts and lifters, the tech will know once he starts the tear down.

So.....
I got the left bank done and now noise from the right bank... and metal shavings in the oil pan...
Dealer is starting a tear down tomorrow. I think I'm going to need new main bearings and rod bearings and the same for the right side.

Ouch! Whats the mileage on your car ?
E63 Cam Adjusters
I purchased my 2010 E63 AMG at the end of March this year from a Toronto Luxury Car Dealer (not Mercedes). It drove like brand new until last week; while driving in a parking lot it began stuttering, idling rough and the "Check Engine" light came on. I had the code scanned and it threw 13 codes. I booked an appointment and took it to Mercedes Benz. I was told that the Cam Adjusters were the problem and that they were on back order. The Service Advisor told me that the Warranty expired a week before, so I would pay for the Diagnosis, Spark Plug replacement (as they were fouled) and 2 or 4 Cam Adjusters (costing roughly $1000 Cdn). I emailed Mercedes Benz Canada and got a quick response that they contacted the Dealer's Service Managers. The Service Advisor called me last Friday and told me that his department was contacted by Head Office and that I would pay for the Diagnosis and the Spark Plugs but they would cover the Cam Adjusters and they had ordered them in. Sounded good, but on Monday I got a call saying that they "re-evaluated" the situation and that they would cover 50% of the cost of the Cam Adjusters because my Warranty expired and that I did not purchase the vehicle directly from Mercedes Benz. Now I must pay for the Diagnosis, Spark Plugs, 50% of the Cam Adjusters cost, 5 hours Labour....plus taxes of course, totalling around $1800 Cdn. Today is Wednesday and they still have the car.
